K1 Visa Applicant has EAD, waiting on SSN, and possibly PREGNANT (No insurance)

Hey everyone,

I am reaching out on behalf of my wife (K1 Visa Applicant). Currently I am in between jobs with no health insurance, and my wife is possibly pregnant. I have just started doing research on what types of actions I should be taking, but I thought I would throw this out in the Forum because it is usually very helpful. The status of my wife is that we have received the EAD, but we are waiting on her social security number. I call Social Security and the Department of Homeland Security application is still pending. No surprise there, but I really want to get ahead of this health insurance issue, and figure out what my wife is eligible for, and how we can be prepared to take on this pregnancy with few issues.

If anyone can share helpful tips or advice, that would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

SamNadia

When you left your previous job you should have remained on COBRA. Assuming it's too late you should find a job ASAP; preferably one that allows you to obtain health insurance on day 1 and sign yourself and your wife up. You may also have an issue when it comes time for her interview since you currently do not have an income in regards to the I-864..another reason to find a job ASAP. Hopefully SSN offices open up soon and she can get a SSN for work purposes however it is your responsibility to make sure she has coverage not hers. In the meantime you can pay out of pocket for health care. Some places have sliding scale fees based on income but it may only be for citizens and residents. You can also try Planned Parenthood and other community based clinics.

Please do your research prior to it being time to remove conditions on her green card because it seems like you were a bit unprepared this time around.

Depending on your state, the birth and/or medical care can be done with medicaid while you search for insurance.
