This is what I received from the ombudsman's office, which is pretty similar to what Steve got:

"You are not alone in expressing this concern. CISOMB has notified USCIS leadership of the situation and been pleased by the apparent responsiveness. Reproduced in relevant part below is what USCIS has told us.

Right now the [Vermont Service] center is actively working fiancée petitions received on June 4th, which is slightly ahead of our 6 month goal. Of course some older cases are still being worked that have issues with respect to missing documentation, where we have had to ask for additional material, or where there are substantive background or other issues.

We recognize the circumstances of fiancée petitions, and each petitioner’s intense interest in getting their case processed so their fiancée may apply for a visa to come here to marry. To be fair to everyone we do work to process these cases in strict order. There are limited exceptions where a case may be processed more quickly, for example where we use a case for training purposes. Similarly we do give a somewhat higher priority to the K-3 variation of these petitions filed along with an I-130 relative petition since in essence we consider the duplicative K-3 petition an expedite request. Further, since the Vermont Service Center processes a large volume of cases, they may be working cases of any given type that were received over a few days or weeks time. For example, in August and September the Vermont Service Center received over 4,300 fiancée petitions and over 22,000 relative petitions. That’s over 100 fiancée petitions and 500 relative petitions per business day. To handle that volume means we distribute it among a significant number of our employees.

I recommend you check our website occasionally for updates on our processing times. If you don’t receive an answer within the processing time, I suggest you contact our National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283 for assistance."

Basically a form letter they have devised. But it helps to have a better understanding of the volumes they are dealing with. Definitely puts it into a better perspective for me.

........ To handle the volume also means we move several days or several weeks work being actively processed by our officer staff at any given time, which can lead to s slight variation in processing times among individual cases.

What does that mean?

I THINK it means pretty much what we were guessing, earlier - that even though the petitions are stacked or stored in order, they take them off the shelves in big bundles, which may mean that someone at the bottom of one batch will be processed later than the person who ends up on the top of the next big stack they take, even though their petition was received earlier

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Don't forget about sending the kisses to VSC.

Remember, we are trying to make an impact to coincide with the press release that is COMING OUT MONDAY!!

We need as many people sas possible to send send send some chocolate goodness to the folks at VSC. Doesn't have to be expensive...for as little as $7.00 you too can do your part to get us noticed. The more we send the more likely we are to get some kind attention on this matter that is keeping us from our loved ones.

Lets make sure virgillionaire's hard work in getting this together does not go to waste.

I don't know if this question has already been answered because this forum is rather prolific and I no longer follow. But regarding the chocolates........I work for the government and Monday is a government holiday in NY, is it a holiday for the VSC staffers as well? Are we requesting the chocolates to arrive on Monday or Tuesday?

Here's a little more perspective that you can drop into the FWIW bucket. I did a quick query of the VJ NOA1 receipts records for Aug&Sept and came up with a total of 96 (that's 64 Aug + 32 Sep). That works out to appx 2.2325581395348837209% (+ or - a few digits) of their total. I'm interested to hear from those who are more statistically knowledgeable than me if that represents a statistically significant sampling, for analysis purposes.

I'm actually quite surprised. For some reason, I guess I suspected the proportional amount of VJers would be less. Something like <0.1%. I actually think this is a lot.

I'm actually quite surprised. For some reason, I guess I suspected the proportional amount of VJers would be less. Something like <0.1%. I actually think this is a lot.

So for the month of october, VJ displays 19 K1 approvals, which taking 2.2% approximation would come out to (19/0.022) approx 864 K1 approvals per month for Vermont.

Further approximating to 20 business days per month, that would come out to just over 43 K1 vermont approvals per day.

Now, how many petitions can a single person approve in an 8 hour shift? I've read somewhere on VJ that for an easy one it takes only 15 min. Assuming for simplicity sake 10.75 approvals per person per day (at a bit under 45 min per petition (60*8/10.75)), that would mean they had only 43/10.75=4 (FOUR) adjudicators working on K1 petitions in October in the whole of Vermont!!!

Now, i might have made a mistake with the calculations or approximations somewhere, and I sure hope I did, BUT if my calculations are correct, the whole backlog could have easily been avoided by hiring just a few more K1 adjudicators!!!!

Could I make a request that you periodically repost, or add to your signature, the link to ordering the kisses? This will make it easier for people (like myself  ) not to laze out or have to search back through the posts to find where/how to do it.
