Why Americans Keep Getting Fatter

On average, we each consume 200 calories more per day than we did 30 years ago – mostly in the form of hidden corn calories.

How are the calories hidden?

For me, they're hidden in that HCFS is in food I wouldn't even expect to be sweet at all, let alone for it to contain extra sweeteners. One that springs to mind is the jar of pickles in our fridge door right now... the so-called vinegar seems to consist mostly of HCFS. Since when did vinegar need syrup in it?

There's plenty more... of course, I only just moved here, but for someone who knows (or knew, in her own country) pretty much what, and how much, she could eat, without putting on weight, the same rules do not apply AT ALL over here, even when you're eating an (apparently, at face value) comparable diet. The only way around it is to cook EVERYTHING from scratch, I think, or I'm going to be piling on the pounds month by month. :(

What's wrong with cooking anyway? It's an enjoyable escape from the day to day BS, with benefits. Why are we seeking alternative solutions to reality?

Eat the same #######, you will get fat. Cook your own food, responsibly, you will yield everything.

What more needs to be said here, more blame to the politicians? Wrong. Step up and fix your diet.

It's not like it's handed down from the Platonic Ideal of the Bread Recipe that your bread must have HFCS in it. Politicians don't deserve all of the blame, but the corn subsidy makes it cheaper for companies to cut corners with flavor. You can think you're making a healthy sandwich and be getting lots of extra junk. Change the incentives, and they'll take the junk out.

I would more believe to this, that parents (both) are to busy in their rush and working life, that they cant find time (or will) to work with their children education about food, because its easier to give money and send to Macdonald's after you are tired in evening. Its just 21 century problem everywhere.

You are still free to go to some bazaar and find special food and cook for yourself at home and control it. If you have time, of course. Now, when I am not allowed to work, I can do my kitchen experiments one after other. When I will get busy, probably our diet wont be so good anymore.

Market doesn't work without rules. If there is someone who will buy, so there will be someone who will provide this.

But what if you're a contourtionist with a sensationable desire to always bend forward to eat without the use of hands? Wasn't it written somewhere, "Please eat thyself"?

Steven, I think I'd be more likely to believe the link between HFCS and type II diabetes showing up in children than the overall obesity trend. And I think you're 100% right as to the link between poverty & obesity. But I think I'd blame trends in inactivity, city planning, and the like more than HFCS. Should go anyway, though. Corn subsidy's out of hand and it makes the Iowa primaries a joke.

C. needs to drop about 20 pounds. But he's had luck losing weight in the past doing nothing but cutting Coke out of his diet. Switch out sodas with water, and you probably save about 300 calories a day.

Alex, I often buy Ezekiel 4:9 sprouted breads from Trader Joe's, or directly from a local bakery. Either way, you avoid the HFCS.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I would be in favor if HFCS were banned. It probably won't happen until more conclusive studies have been done, but I'm really skeptical about any food additive that has been molecularly altered.

I'm generally not in favor of bans, partly due to my libertarian bent. But the HFCS thing is partly caused by the government, and though I'm not sure a ban is the way to go, the subsidies definitely need to end. The stuff is indeed hard to avoid. Try getting canned fruit that isn't swimming in "heavy syrup", i.e., HFCS. Since when does fruit need to be sweetened with syrup? Isn't it supposed to be sweet on its own?

I think we should ban anything that makes people fat that wouldn't cause too much of an uproar. (I doubt banning donuts would go over well with the general population.) We're having a health crisis here and we need to do SOMETHING.

I'd be happy if they ended the subsidies too and I'd be cautious about banning food additives, but if enough conclusive evidence proved that such an additive is extremely harmful, then it shouldn't be in our food. Rat poison in small enough amounts won't kill us, but I think most of us would agree that food companies should not be allowed to add it into the food we eat.

2. Does anyone know of a lo-cal bread that doesn't use HFCS? I can't find one for the life of me.

I checked the ingredients of every type of bread in the neighbourhood grocery store, and they all had it. But then I found a local bakery that uses only healthy, natural ingredients in their bread. No HFCS. And the bread is delicious. :)

As for finding other healthier food choices, look for health food stores.

Yeah, I can find lots of healthy HFCS-free breads, but not any that are less than 50 cals a slice, which is what a nice sandwich would need to be for me right about now.
