Hi all,

My husband and I arrived in the US last month. On the DS-260 form, we checked off the box that allowed his information to be forwarded to the Social Security Administration in hopes of just receiving his SSN a few weeks after arrival. This turned out to not be the case, and we were told to mail in an SSN application to our local office, which they have received.

After my husband called last week, he was informed that despite having all his paperwork, the office would not be able to issue a SSN because an in-person interview is necessary, and no interviews are being held at the moment due to COVID-19 restrictions. This is the first time I've ever heard about an interview for a SSN, and I guess I was just wondering if anyone is going through this same issue. Has this always been the case?

Hi so my wife got to the US before the COVID happened.  I thought the same thing that my wife’s SSN would just come in the mail but it didn’t after about a month so we decided to go straight to our local office to find out.  I am not sure if it’s an interview but they did ask my wife some in-person questions.  My wife got her SSN with a week!!

My suggestion is just go to your local SSN office and reapply through them. It’s very simple.

Good luck!!

OP points out that the SSA offices are closed due to COVID-19.
