Does anyone know if a certified copy (obtained online and sent via mail) of a birth certificate would be enough to prove my relationship to my father who will be the joint sponsor for my husband? I live abroad and due to COVID am trying to avoid asking my parents to go in person to get the long form BC. I stupidly sent in my original with the I-130 application (lesson learned).

My parents have another long form copy at home, but, as I understand it, any documents I upload to NVC will need to be presented in person at the interview so I'm thinking of ordering a certified copy online and having it sent to me so the long form can stay safe at home.

Just in case it helps, the birth certificate will be from Washington DC.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

A certified copy by the issuing authority is just as good/same as an "original".

Why are you worried about proving your relationship to your sponsor?

Ohh interesting..... I just checked state.gov again and it says:

If you completed Form I-864A, submit evidence that proves your relationship to the sponsor (the person who filed Form I-864). You can prove your relationship by submitting a photocopy of one of the documents below:

  • Birth certificate;
  • Marriage certificate;
  • Adoption certificate;
  • The petitioner or joint sponsor’s most recent Federal Income Tax Returns, if you are listed as a dependent; or
  • A signed, written statement describing the relationship.

But I didn't notice its I-864A ... are you implying I don't need to prove my relationship to my dad if he is my joint sponsor as we will both be filing I-864? That would be amazinggg

Yes.  The i864a needs a relationship to the named sponsor on the i864 they are supplementing.   A joint sponsor doesn't need a relationship to the other sponsor

YMMV
