Yep i am not sending mine... i will wait

We are prioritizing requests for in-person SSN services for:

  • Individuals age 12 or older applying for their first SSN card.
  • Individuals who need to update or correct their SSN information (such as your name, date of birth, or citizenship) to obtain income, resources, or medical care or coverage, or other services or benefits (for example filing a tax return, applying for housing, or seeking an Economic Impact Payment).

If you believe you qualify for an in-person appointment, call your local office. You can look up the phone number for your local office by accessing our office locator. Please note that appointments may not be immediately available, depending on local health and safety conditions and staffing.

Might send the passport and a high fidelity copy of the naturalization certificate.

Spoke with them last week. They confirmed would get it back in a week or so.

Then, can take care of DMV.

Why this for the profile pic?  Often in movies and on TV when they show Hawaii they show this beach/view. So, instead of doing Kauai or some other locale, we decided to do here, so that whenever some show shows Hawaii and this view, we will see where we were married.

They will reject it.

There is a watermark, and embossed seal, that can't be faked.

They will use the passport, which is all that is necessary.

(They will NOT REJECT anything...they will merely not use it as they deem appropriate. It is only added as additional information, not as THE qualifying document.)

IT IS WHAT IT IS - MOVING FORWARD NONETHELESS

Given that nobody has any idea when covid-related closings might end, decided to go ahead and get the SSA and DMV citizenship update done as things currently permit.

Called my local SSA last week. They re-confirmed what they had said earlier - "Mail in the naturalization certificate or passport, and we will process it and send it back to you".

Decided to send the passport (cheaper/easier to get a new one, no emotional attachment to it..hee hee, not going to need it anytime soon...smile, etc.).

Will let you know how it goes -

STATUS

01/29/2021 Friday     - Mailed the form and passport to the local SSA Office via USPS

02/01/2021 Monday - USPS shows package was delivered

02/02/2021 Tuesday - Spoke with local SSA Office. Was told that receipt was not in their system yet; said could take 7-10 days to be scanned and put in the system; another 7-10 days for work-at-home SSA agent to process it.

SSA

Our letter said, if they did not need more info from us, we would get another SSN card shortly.

No new card yet. It has been about two weeks, so we think maybe this week.

We have also checked with SSA several times, and our record  has not been updated yet.

So...we shall see how long that  takes and let you know here.

-------

DMV

The next/last thing is updating the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

So, we spoke with them,  several times.

Here in Florida, the local DMV said that once our SSA record has been updated, we can come into our local office anytime (without an appointment at our local office), and apply for an updated DRIVER'S license, including paying the $31 for the license.

Note, my current license is brand new, and is already REAL ID,  with the correct married name and correct address!

Bummed  that we have to actually get a license  replacement....and pay for it, but it is what it is.

We  spoke with several  DMV clerks, they all said this same thing.

Will let you all know our experience.

Cheers.

I also found out from the postal service that even though employees at the social security offices are working each weekday, they only allow postal service access to deliver mail a couple of time a week.

Wow! If true, yours got there at exactly the right time.

We still haven't gotten the new SSA card.

Maybe that works with picking up the mail too, and that has slowed it down! Who knows!

We suspect the records have been updated, so we could go to DMV any time we want now.

Will let ya know.

I renewed my license (I had the older non-Real ID one) yesterday here in Florida,  without updating social security.  According to the FL DMV website, you only need to update social security first if you are changing your name.  Since you already have the newer license, I don't think you need to replace your license at all.

That is not what multiple SSA and DMV representatives indicate, if you want your record to reflect your newly gotten citizenship.

Sure, anyone, including non-citizens, can renew their license. That is nothing new. Have done that myself.

IF you want your citizenship status at SSA to reflect your newly acquired citizenship, then they need the documents they need.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

In your case, how long ago did you become a US citizen, by the way?

I definitely plan on updating my social security record, but it's not a priority at all.  Unless you plan on drawing benefits that are unique to US citizens, there is no rush.  The way the post office is running these days, I would never risk mailing my new passport or naturalization certificate to social security. I will go there in person when the pandemic is over and take care of it then.

I became a citizen in January of this year. My local office was Oakland Park.
