Thank you for this information Suze1! I prioritized the in-person passport application this afternoon. I was planning to update my SS after I get back my naturalization certificate but you and ME_RHEDZ77 got me thinking.

Maybe I will just wait for SSA. I also got the REAL ID the last time I renewed so I guess I will just wait for my next renewal which is coming up next year.

Ex-postal worker destroyed immigration papers thought to be ‘lost’ in mail, feds say

In 2018, panicked residents began calling Elko Hispanic Services in Nevada about green cards, work permits, and other urgent immigration paperwork that never arrived in their mailboxes.

Eloisa Mendoza, who runs the office, heard from at least 60 people in her community, but suspects hundreds more may have been affected, The Nevada Independent reported.

It turns out the missing paperwork, which cost jobs, canceled trips and created other havoc, wasn’t just lost in the mail — it had been purposely destroyed or discarded, federal charges say.

Diana Molyneux, 77, who has since lost her job at a Salt Lake City postal facility, was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2019 on two counts of destroying or delaying mail, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Why this for the profile pic?  Often in movies and on TV when they show Hawaii they show this beach/view. So, instead of doing Kauai or some other locale, we decided to do here, so that whenever some show shows Hawaii and this view, we will see where we were married.

I faced a similar dilemma .. I am eligible for Medicare soon and the only way I could apply was by sending my actual Green Card and birth certificate to them by post. Oh boy did I have some anxious moments. I used USPS priority mail with signature tracking .. and included a prepaid return Priority envelope already addressed. Thankfully all went well. I called the office after I saw that it was delivered .. they are all working  remotely so no one could actually “ see” it .. but she emailed the agent who was working on it and it was in the return envelope later that day. All enrolled and the GC safely tucked away again .  Phew !

Did you send it to your "local" office?

Mine is like 2 miles away!!!

Yes.  I was told by the agent where to mail it to. They had no arrangements in place for me to hand deliver it ..

I did this recently, was nervous about getting my Certificate of Naturalization back in a timely manner. I submitted to local office by mail and within a week they Fedex'd my Certificate back to me with confirmation it was updated. The actual new card to arrive separately.

I spoke to my local SS office about this today and they said management is advising that people just wait until the office reopens. They said that is expected to be mid to late November. Apparently some people have been mailing in the documents but original documents have gone missing in the mail and they don't recommend it.

Prior to sending my application for my passport, I did thought of updating first my Citizenship Status at SSA. I have called the local SSA office in my city and were been advised same as what been advised to you. The lady that I spoke with said, if I'm not in a hurry, I can wait 'till the office reopens. She told me that there is no bearing even if my citizenship will be updated later.

Also with DMV, since my DL is still valid, the staff that I spoke with, told me since my DL was already a REAL DL ID, there is no problem if I update my citizenship on the due time for renewal of DL, to avoid paying the fee for DL ID.

This is my 2 cents.

We have to let the DMV know we're citizens too? Yeah I am so not doing that anytime soon. I just got a REAL ID as well and I have so many old licenses from the DMV after my almost 10 years here.
