My wife has had her work permit for a few months now and lucky throughout all the covid craziness has landed herself her first American job.

She recently got países and we noticed that her taxes might not be correct. They are taking out social security and Medicare taxes. But from my knowledge there is another percentage that needs to be taken out but for her it states zero. And when I filled her paper work I filled as married and we have zero dependents as we have no kids and it's just me and her.

I am wondering if anyone else has seen or have had these issues and or how can we go about correcting this on her paper work so her next pay cycle can reflect correctly. I know that sometimes for non residents there's a different process or a certain amount they do or don't take out. Can anyone give me some insight on this as I am afraid it could effect me when I got to file taxes for the upcoming year.

Thank you

“Another percentage that needs to be taken out”...can you be more specific what exactly you have in mind? Generally speaking employers take out federal and state income tax and insurance.

I have attached a picture , I am confused where it states 0.00 now she just started and was paid only for the dates she started because it was on a current pay period so it was not a full check. I'm just worried I might be filing something out wrong. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

That looks like FITW (Federal Income Tax Withholding).  She should talk her HR department to make sure her W-4 has been processed correctly for future pay checks.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Yes , the part that got cut off states fed withholdings. We spoke with her HR department and he stated everything looks correct on there end. But if we had any concerns we could re fill out the W-4 and submit it again. But I'm lost on how its supposed to be filled because I fill w2. So I don't know if I am filing it incorrectly for her other then married with zero dependents.

Personally, I would wait until her next pay period.  Then, if she wants more withheld, she can change the W-4 single.

You filled out a W-4 as well. You will both get a W-2 at the end of the year (well, sometimes next year).

Not sure why they aren’t withholding the right taxes...I’m not confident it’s a W-4 issue or if they may have her flagged as being exempt for some reason.

Could it be because she's a non resident waiting for her green card? Yes, she just started less then a week ago.

Going to take that advice and wait for the next pay period and see if they with hold anything. I figured it would at least be a percentage , I'm more concerned that it could affected me when I go to file and we end up owing vs. Getting anything back. Because I personally with own taxes have never had any issues I always file with 1for my take home could be a decent amount.

Those amounts reflect a paycheck of about $335. Is that a month’s wage? 2 weeks?  Sometimes a wage is so low that no federal taxes are owed which is how this happened. If this is not reflecting a full pay period, then it may straighten out next paycheck.

if she was being treated as a non-resident, the withholding would be at a higher rate, not a zero rate.

It's the same for me. I filled the W-4 as married filing jointly, spouse employed, no exemptions.  I'm paying state but no federal taxes because this year I won't pass the $9999 mark and everything below this is $0 federal taxes. That's how HR explained it to me.
