I'm the petitioner, In USA living and my wife is the beneficiary, in Canada. We are doing the CR-1 Spouse Visa. I-130 accepted and I submitted paperwork to NVC and paid the fees. Today my wife will be submitting her IV. Fees already paid. Then we will wait to hear what NVC says. Whenever the interview is scheduled I was going to obviously join my wife in Montreal for the interview. Now that Covid has shut down the border, how would this be possible? Is it necessary for me to be there at the interview with her? It is a concern of mine because it makes sense for me to be at the interview. Anyone else going through this or know what is going on possibly?

I believe the US/CA border is now open for immediate family members. Regardless, the interview is for the immigrant and the petitioner is not required. While some embassies used to allow the petitioner to accompany the applicant (many did not), I can’t imagine a scenario post-covid where this would be encouraged/possible.

Montreal has a huge backlog, I think wait times for interviews pre-covid were 9 months or so. They have not resumed visa interviews yet. So by the time you receive the interview appointment, border closures etc might not be a topic anymore.

Spouses are prohibited from attending MTL interviews; the immigrant has to do it on their own.

Better not to attend interview
