The operative word that I used was “may.” This does not imply that I believe what the article says, actually, I did not even read the article. I was being open minded that there could be more than one reason for the backlog. Also I did mention that the current USCIS fees and previous ones cause the agency to run at a deficit implying that someone did not make a good financial decision.

Immigration is expensive, full stop.  And we are in unprecedented times with the COVID, i.e. there is nothing in recent world history for us to draw from.  Immigration was a much different deal during the last pandemic.

 

As someone who waited 14 months for husband's AOS interview after filing, I'm no stranger to waiting.  It sucks, but we all get through it somehow.

 

Edited to add:  If you really want to do something tangible to help, wear a mask.  The sooner we get our numbers under control, the sooner we can resume normal life in the world of immigration.  77K new cases in a day in this country is shameful.

What exactly is involved with "defunding USCIS"? None of the operations for USCIS processing of petitions, applications, cards, etc. are funded via external sources. They are funded entirely by the fees for those operations. The amount of external funding USCIS does receive is for certain specific programs, such as e-Verify.

The issue noted in this article is due to a lack of sufficient funding from those fees. USCIS - correctly or not - depended on new fees coming in to complete processing of existing cases in the system. And when those fees dried up (supposedly there's been a near 50% drop since the start of COVID-19 shutdowns), something had to give. Well, several things did and still are, such as productions of cards, fraud investigations, etc.

 

The issue is they are prohibited from just increasing the fees to cover this - it's generally a long, drawn out process to change fees, with external approvals required - or charging more after the fact.

One can say it's poor management, but honestly I'm not sure what they can do when they are forced to take in new forms with fees that they know wont cover the entire costs of processing them (along with the various processes that have no fee, which then is added into the costs of every other form).

Like I said, some will die but most will live.  What is 135k in a country with 330 million??  .00040909 of the population.  That is if the 135k number is truly from vulnerable people dying from covid and not people who had a mild case and WAS positive but died by another means.

That's is the beauty of living in the US.  We can believe what we want, question what we want and say what we want.  When politics and money gets involved things get manipulated

As bad as this is, the underlying funding issue is the real killer. USCIS may furlough up to 70% of their employees if they don't get a loan from Congress. If that happens, non-emergency processing will likely come to a near halt.

@geowrian this was actually dinner intentionally. The USCIS informed Congress that only 1 external vendor contract was terminated due to their supposedly financial predicament. The non-renewal of their printing contract vendor was not disclosed.

 

In addition, the USCIS could have kept it's internal Corbin KY print facility staffed up and transfer employees to this department thru cross-country training. Instead it just shuttered the Corbin KY internal printing machines. So now we only have 1 internal printing facility operational (Lee's Summit MO) operation meeting the demand from the 3 previous functioning sites.

 

After this article garnered attention from Congress, the USCIS have told congressional staffers that they are doing cross training to augment Lee's Summit printing capacity.

 

However, this is all moot on August 4 if the furloughs begin without the $1.2B loan as even the Lee's Summit printers will stop then too.

 

By now you will see news breaking that the USCIS has informed Congress that they actually still have sufficient funds to operate thru the rest if the fiscal year but still insist on the Aug 4 furloughs.

 

I'm a registered Republican and even I can see that this is yet another attempt to hinder and stiffle the legal immigration this great nation was founded on
