Change of circumstance..what do we do?

Hi team. We are currently in the NVC stage of our process. I have submitted all documents and awaiting DQ. We live aboard (myself American) and have found out this week that our 4 year old needs major hip surgery. Where we live has free public health so we have no say of when it can happen and our surgeon said its likely to happen early-mid next year. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I understand if we get DQ we still have to wait for interview which can be a long wait at the moment plus we have an additional 6 months to enter the country after that. I'm just wondering if we should ride it out and see what the timing ends up being or if we need to tell NVC? Very lost and heartbroken so any information would be appreciated.

Once the visa interview is scheduled, you can delay the process by rescheduling the interview for a later date.   

The immigration visa will expire 6 months from the date of the medical exam, so schedule it for a few days before the rescheduled interview.

Yes, and you can also contact NVC now and ask for your interview to be delayed until say summer of 2021.  They will do that if you catch them in time.  I tend to think the reschedule idea is actually better though.  It's quite possible you won't get an interview before then anyway.  No way to know that Consulates will STAY OPEN after they DO open again.
