Knightsbridge Medical and Vaccinations

Hello all!

Today I was able to acquire a health summary from the NHS and my vaccination records.

My health summary is fine aside from missing several vaccinations, I have everything except Hep A, Hep B, Pneumococcal and Rotavirus. It also says Varicella is required but I had chicken pox twice as a child, I'm sure I have an immunity to it now lol so do I need the shots for that?

For the others, I asked right on the spot at the GP at they said they don't issue Hep A and Hep B there cause the risk of infection is low and I'd need to do an eConsult online about Pneumococcal and Rotavirus. Could I just get the vaccinations at the Knightsbridge medical? How much would it cost? Truth be told I live quite far away from my GP and the travelling there is annoying, if the cost isn't too high I wouldn't mind just getting it at Knightsbridge.

For adults the following is required ONLY:

. Here are the shots needed for 19 through 59 years of age:

  • Td or Tdap - Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis or get DT, DTP or DtaP and it will be accepted for AOS also. The latest shot must be no longer than 10 years ago or you need a booster. If you have a record of receiving pertussis, then the Td is okay for the booster.
  • MMR - (if born in 1957 or later)-Mumps/measles/rubella. It's two doses in your life, but if you get the first dose, and 4 weeks haven't passed by your medical, they will waive the second dose for "insufficient time interval". If you only had one dose as a child, get a second one before the medical.
  • Varicella - Not routinely given in the UK . A history of having chickenpox excuses you from the shot. They take your word for it at the visa medical exam.
  • Influenza – Required during flu season only, October 1 through March 31. This was a new recommendation dated November 2010 for all ages over 6 months. Older lists will say flu shots for over age 50. It changed. The list on the London embassy website is out of date since 2009. Don’t follow it.

Assuming you are an adult, there are only 4 shots you need.
1 will be waived because of chickenpox (varicella).

1 will be waived because it’s not flu season (if you attend the medical before Oct 1i

So you are left with worrying about

MMR (mumps/measles/rubella)

Td (tetanus/diphtheria) no longer than 10 years ago

I have to get the booster for Rubella and that was £50 or £60 for a blood test to check immunity. I opted for the cheaper one at Knightsbridge. Hope this helps, I know it's not the same one you are asking but thought it might give an idea of price. Also, the medical centre has a price list - www.visamedicals.co.uk . it's under US section and Price List.

Thank you to you both, yes I have all of those though I do need a booster for my DTP. Does Knightbridges conduct vaccination boosters and is it expensive? I am just weighing my options.

Thank you so much, hmm, I will contact my medical practice and see if it will cost me anything, Knightsbridge is quite pricey.

I had my boosters done at my GP free of charge, but it was a year ago and before the virus etc... but it would definitely be worth seeing if you could get them done for free that way instead of paying at the medical

Tell them it is required for travel. If it is for leaving the country permanently, your GP can charge as it's not covered.

Had my Td booster done for free as well at my GP last year. I mentioned it was for a visa and they were happy to give me the booster.

The nurse did mention that normally they only offer these if it's for travelling.

In the U.K. they will give you Revaxis to meet the requirement for Td. It includes polio in the mix, which you don’t require but that’s just your bonus because they don’t have the same drugs as the US with just tetanus/diphtheria.
(P does not stand for polio when talking about the US DTP or Tdap shot)

Some NHS offices give free with no question. Others charge. So many different experiences have been posted in this forum. You can also price Boots or clinics in grocery stores.  Or get it at the visa medical.

Yes I got as many as I could, but for some reason my GP didn't mention the rubella one so I was actually surprised on the day and it was either pay up or delay the visa and I'd been waiting almost two years to get to that point lol. :) Good luck, hope you get them all sorted!
