You can always apply. I work in tech and right now most companies are not trying to deal with hiring people that will need visas and dont currently have one. There are already bans in place and uncertainty about what is coming down the line. Good Luck

Honestly, if you don’t have experience it’s best to stay close to your college location for your first job unless It’s through campus recruitment or went to a globally recognized prestigious brand name college.

You can apply  for job. Best choice would be to find a company that is in germany and willing to send you to US through intra company transfer. in that case you can use L- Visa. H1b is lottery based as you will have to wait until next october even if you get the lottery next year.

This.  Try to get a job at a US tech company, there are lots with offices in London, Amsterdam of Berlin.   I will point out based on experience I found that the US professional job market is much more competitive than Europe even if the  pay is also higher US.

Normally people get a H1B and move to EB2 Green card once in US.  If you really want to move to US find a US Masters program,

Thank you James and Henry, this is an interesting advice. As far as I know, I would have to work at least for one year for such a company until they could send me to the US. Dublin in Ireland could also be an interesting (temporary) place for me, because there also seem to be a lot of tech companies.

hi. look into the diversity visa program, too. that one is not tied to any employer and you come in as an immigrant (vs on a working visa like the L/EB/H1B visas). ALso, as a German citizen, i imagine you have a good chance of getting in.

I was going to suggest the diversity lottery as well.  It's free, so even if the chances aren't good it's not much time or effort to apply.

Thank you doggieandsam and kiwibean for your advice. I will take part in the diversity lottery of this year, even though the chances are not very high. But you are right, this option is basically free.

Thank you designguy for your inside perspective. Unfortunately, you confirm my concerns that most companies probably will not hire someone who needs a visa right now. I think I will have to do both - to wait and to continue to apply for jobs.

I haven't worked in a tech company yet and doing so will be a career change for me. However, I already acquired 10 years of relevant work experience in Germany.

Not sure if anyone in the thread mentioned, EB-1 and EB-2 NIW visas do not require you to have a job here.

Hello IJJ,

Thank you for your suggestion. I wanted to apply for an EB-2 NIW and I actually contacted an immigration law firm about this but unfortunately I don't have the required national reputation/impact, yet. As it seems now, I will continue to work in Germany for another year or so, maybe during this time I can build up some additional reputation. I will also take part in the diversity lottery during this time ;)
