IRS Finally Starting to Process Paper Returns

For those waiting for the IRS to process income tax refunds for 2019, we submitted our joint return in February, 5 months ago, hoping for a quick refund which was a significant amount because we bought an all-electric car last year.  Then we heard nothing for five months.  We had no choice but to file a paper return because when trying to file electronically via TurboTax, the IRS system rejected the return because my husband immigrated on a CR-1 in August 2019 and now he has a SSN.  Last year we filed with an W-7 requesting an ITIN so their system was not smart enough to match the two numbers and we couldn't file digitally, only paper.  Because of the virus, paper returns just piled up in storage rooms and trailers, about a million returns a week.  I checked the online refund status many times a week but there was nothing except "your return has not yet been processed," until yesterday, now the status says "refund approved, will be deposited into your bank on July 15."  So for those who also filed a paper return and have been waiting patiently during the shutdown, things seem to be opening up again in the federal government.  Just wanted to share some good news in this crazy time.  Stay safe and healthy everyone!

Good to know.  I filed jointly in February of this year too, along with the ITN application, which only allowed us to paper file.  Received ITN but still waiting on my taxes to be processed.

Wow, that's a long time. I read somewhere in media that those who will receive a refund will at least get some sort of interest because they process the returns so late, not sure if this is true?

Me and my husband only filed on July 7 (via our tax guy) and already today (July 13) our tax transcript was available on IRS website. Super quick when filing online. Last year I had to wait 2 weeks, so online filing has clearly sped up a little this year.
