Their island, they can call it what they want.

Oh, and there were other services there besides the marines you know. I would think that most normal marines have no interest at all in waging war on a nation that has not declared war on us, and any that do really shouldn't be in the armed forces.

It really doesn't matter who made the mistake, the island is part of Japan, and thust he Japanese have the right to rename the island whatever they want. It doesn't matter who lives there, or who is initiating the renaming process, it is their island, their country, their right to do with it as they please. They could rename it tim-butt-two and would still have the right to do so.

The other point that appears to have been missed here is that they're not changing the name so much as the spelling of it.

I can see why someone would be a little peeved if, for sake of argument, someone were to mispell America as Amerika and the mis-spelled version entered into common usage.

The civilians were evacuated in 1944... Some Japanese navy officers who moved in to fortify the island mistakenly called it Iwo Jima, and the name stuck. After the war, civilians weren't allowed to return...

Locals were never happy the name Iwo Jima took root...

In March, Ogasawara, the municipality that administers Iwo To and neighboring islands, responded by adopting a resolution making Iwo To the official name. Ogasawara residents and descendants of Iwo To evacuees petitioned the central government to follow suit.

"Though we're happy for Iwo To, which has been forgotten by history, the islanders are extremely grieved every time they hear Iwo To referred to as Iwo Jima," the local Ogasawara newspaper quoted the resolution as saying of the Eastwood movies.

The government agreed; an official map with the new name will be released on Sept. 1.

I see no problem with this at all. They get evacuated from the island, it gets called the wrong name, they're not allowed back and they want the original name to be re-instated. If a battle hadn't occurred there, would anyone really care about this?

It is beyond me why any American should be upset about this. And furthermore, to say that we need to kick their ####### because they want to rename *their* island is absurd and disgusting.

I think they should have had a country wide lottery to let the civilians rename it. If I know the Japanese, they could have created some seriously messed up contest out of this.

I can hardly see that anything is being ‘taken away’ from WW2 veterans by this. It’s not like the Japanese Govt. have decided to stop recognizing the battle or holding war memorials there; and indeed there are plenty of places around the world which are known by colloquial nick-names – Iwo-Jima is so commonly used anyway I can hardly see it causing confusion that it will now be labeled slightly differently on a map. Of course that makes it arguably pointless – but even so the island being their property they can call it whatever they like, officially; I don’t see the problem. More to the point I don’t see, at least from what has been said so far, any underhand motives to suggest that this is an exercise in political correctness (in which the goal would surely be to disenfranchise veterans of their history and legacy). Seems to me there’s a lot better things to get angry about.

it's real easy jenn, you probably don't know any us marines and if you did, you'd know how significant the battle of iwo jima is to marines. so are you going to continue with the petty remarks or grow up?
