Some facts about pumpkins you probably didn't know:

* Pumpkins are fruits. A pumpkin is a type of squash and is a member of the gourd family (Cucurbitacae), which also includes squash, cucumbers, gherkins, and melons.

* The largest pumpkin ever grown was 1,689 pounds. It was grown by Joe Jutras of North Scituate, Rhode Island and weighed at the Topsfield Fair GPC weigh-off in Topsfield, MA on September 29, 2007.

* The top pumpkin production states are Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California.

* In early colonial times, pumpkins were used as an ingredient for the crust of pies, not the filling.

* Native Americans called pumpkins "isqoutm squash."

* Using pumpkins as lanterns at Halloween is based on an ancient Celtic custom brought to America by Irish immigrants. All Hallows Eve on October 31st marked the end of the old Celtic calendar year. On that night hollowed-out turnips, beets and rutabagas with a candle inside were placed on windowsills and porches to welcome home spirits of deceased ancestors and ward off evil spirits and a restless soul called "Stingy Jack."

Interesting!

Do you have pumpkin recipes to share Marilyn? Thanks in advance.. (F):)

I have a recipe for harvest loaf that is yummy... I did have a recipe for pumpkin chocolate chip cookies but I lost it....

this one uses canned pumpkin...

Harvest Loaf

1/2 margarine, softened

1 cup white sugar

2 eggs

1 cup canned pumpkin (without spice)

2 cups flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking poder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ginger

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup nuts (optional)

Cream margarine and sugar together. Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in pumpkin.

In another bowl combine the remaining ingredients, stir to mix together. Pour flour mixture into egg mixture. Mix all together, just until moistened.

Spoon into a greased 9" by 5" loaf pan. bake in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes to an hour or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for about 10 minutes. then turn loaf onto a cooling rack. when cool wrap.

you probably could use pumpkin puree to if you wanted (if you have real pumpkins on hand that is).. I think I have before and it works good...

I wish I had the recipe for the cookies, maybe my mom still has it.. there are a bunch of recipes for them on the net but I know the one that I have used works great...

I am not a big fan of pumpkin pie but I really like the loaf and the cookies
