May can you call the doctor and tell him the issue and have him mail the consulate the letter sealed? this way the doctor knows that the only people seeing this is the government and himself. He can send it directly to them without you having to carry it in and perhaps the doctor would be more apt to doing that for you. You should check with him.

Unbelievable, May. I am so sorry. This is probably the biggest issue which makes me really irritable about this process..... the fact that you're already traumatized by a family emergency, then having it compounded by this type of situation. This is the number one reason why I would not recommend a K-1 visa.

I hope you are able to resolve this soon. My heart goes out to you.

Yes, in retrospect we would have gone the K-3 route, had we known something like this would happen. The K-1 was just the easiest and quickest route, and since I only make it home to Canada once a year, I didn't foresee a need to go home during AOS. Hindsight is 20/20....it's just a hard way to have to learn that lesson.

We were finally able to get my dad to give his physician permission to write a more detailed letter. He faxed a whole pile of letters, CT scan results, etc.....it was the first confirmation for me that his condition is truly dire and untreatable. We went to another Infopass appointment on Friday, and were denied AGAIN. The officer looking at our case was very unpleasant and harsh, and said that because he's not in a coma or already dead, they wouldn't issue the AP. I may have said earlier that he's refusing all treatment and care, and if he has it his way, he'll live out his remaining days in the comfort of his own home. If he does enter the hospital at all, by that time he probably wouldn't recognize any of us - it would be too late. When she told us we weren't approved, I broke down right there in the office in front of her. At that point she did show some empathy, and said she would put in a request to expedite the AP, but she had no guarantees as to if or when that might come through.

I was supposed to fly out today. After thinking about just boarding the plane and risking AOS abandonment, I rebooked the ticket for 2 weeks later. I didn't want to make a hasty decision while I was feeling so emotional. If I still don't have the AP or the greencard by then, I WILL risk it.

We're going to keep trying - we'll go to another office for an Infopass next week, and we've contacted our senator and congressman. I did a VJ search on expedited APs, but didn't get a sense for how long they usually take to issue. Has anyone had experience with this?

Thanks again to everyone for your well wishes.

This makes me sick. I'm glad you are going to another office. NOWHERE does it say that your family member must be, God forbid, in a coma or dead. The official words are "emergent personal" reasons. I can't think of anything more emergent or personal than this situation. That officer needs a healthy dose of karma real soon.

I don't know if an "expedited" AP is the same as an emergency AP. It would seem to be one and the same thing. I received mine the day after my InfoPass appointment but they did tell me that it would take 1-3 business days. They called my house when it was ready, so maybe you'll get a call to pick up yours before you are subjected to any more inhumane treatment.

Again, I apologize for the terrible treatment you have received. You, your father, and your family are in my prayers.
