Proof of relationship for N-400

Hello All,

We are getting ready to file for my husband's citizenship. He arrived on a K-1 in 2016 and received his green card in July 2017. I noticed by reading the forum that many people included proof of relationship (bank statements, leases, credit card statements etc.) with their application. As far as I can tell, the only proof of relationship required in the application is a marriage certificate; I don't see anywhere that they ask for more evidence. What's the purpose of including all the other support? Just in case the office wants to see it? I certainly don't mind putting it together if it could reduce the chance of an RFE, but I wanted to see if anyone has insights on it.

Also, how many years of support do you suggest including? Everything since the beginning of our marriage, or just paperwork from after we filed ROC last summer?

Thank you!

The official document checklist says you need a lot more than just the marriage certificate:

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

THANK YOU!

I missed this because it wasn't on the application itself. Any thoughts on how far back to go with the documents? I've submitted bank statements and leases up through our ROC last summer, do you think I should all of those, or just include statements from after our ROC?

All of them for the entire period since marriage.

It depends on what rule you file under. Generally people who file under the 5 year rule don't have to show any evidence of bonafide marriage since their filing is no longer based on the marriage to a US citizen.

Those who want to file early on the other hand, under the 3 year rule that is based on the marriage to a US citizen.. will obviously have to show that the marriage is bonafide.

I sent the same evidence as I had already sent for ROC, although I cut it down a little as they already have all of it anyway. And then I focused more on sending new evidence they haven't seen before, most from in between filing the ROC to filing the N-400.
