My husband wants to get his U.S. Driver's License and we were told by someone helping us with our application that he has to get the green card or work permit before he can get the SSN but I am hearing from some other cases that you can apply while you wait and even receive a SSN before ever getting a green card. Has anyone tried to get the SSN without work permit or green card? Thanks in advance!

K-1 folks apply for their SSN shortly after arriving in the US, before marriage. Some like to wait until 2 weeks after arrival, I applied for mine 4 days after arrival. When there is only 2 weeks left on the i-94 it's too late and you have to wait for the EAD.

Why didn’t you apply for SSN when he arrived in the first 90 days?
now you have to wait until he either gets an EAD or green card.

Oh, well the person who helped us with everything said you can't apply until he received the work permit. Wish I would have looked into it more. I just took their word for it. Lesson learned. Bummer.

The best help is not from a person  but by going to your state's information on driving licenses

there is a section from Colorado that addresses the issue when there is not the necessary documents like SS #

https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dmv/applicants-who-are-temporary-lawful-present-residents

you would a a temp lawful under this until you are lawful permanent resident

BTW the man also has to register with selective service (and this will come at when he applies for citizenship)

all the steps you need to follow after coming on K1 were given in the welcome phamlet

Please complete your timeline showing when he entered / hard to go back thru and try to guess

When filling out the form I-765 for EAD one of the questions asks you if you want them to issue a SSN. Do you remember answering that?

Yes We got married 2 weeks after my husband's arrival on the K1 and he applied for his SSN a few days after the wedding. He had his SSN 4 weeks later and the EAD card about 5 months later. You need to apply within a certain amount of time after arrival though, although I don't remember the amount of days exactly offhand. I'm sure someone else can chime in on that.

in the past, people needed to wait around 2 weeks for their names to be in the system, since it was a paper i-94. No need to wait now. I arrived on a Saturday and applied for SSN on Monday. Received the card in 3 weeks.

But you must apply within 75 days. After that, it's not enough time for DHS to verify the nama in the system.
