So, my wife is in NVC limbo overseas for her spousal interview. It may take a few more months to get here. I am looking at my taxes for 2020...due April 2021.

For years I have filed MFS (no kids) and only my income.

I am afraid of geting hit with a big tax bill for next tax season. Would getting my wife a TIN screw things up while she is processing her visa?

Even though we did not live together in 2020 can we do MFJ?

Any help is appreciated.

If she has an ITIN, you can (and probably should depending on her income) file a joint return.  Getting her an ITIN would have no effect on the immigration process.

I have been living overseas with my wife and we have used a ITIN since our marriage in 2012.   I don't know maybe someone with more experience will tell you but I believe it shows proof of relationship to have my wife on my tax return.  I actually filed for my wife ITIN between tax periods by using the 1040X and received it prior to the next tax period.  I don't remember the requirements but I looked them up and just followed them and it was fairly easy just something else to wait for.  You can file married filing joint even with one income, it actually better for you if you overpaid and maybe can get a refund based on the additional beneficiary/dependent.  Don't know how adding her would increase your taxes as it is usually a deduction that is gained not a tax liability in adding a spouse or childern.  This was my experience.
