Can I apply FAFSA at an overseas institution while not affecting my N-400 application.

I am planning to apply for FAFSA just want to see if I qualify, however its going to be in an university in the UK. I was wondering would that affect my n-400 application?

I don't believe the FAFSA has anything to do with the N-400. FAFSA is a general US-based financial aid application but they can sometimes give aid to foreign institutions as well.

Pell Grant is federal aid but will not affect n400.

Can you clarify if you are worried about the financial aid being seen as a public charge, or about the fact that you plan to move your residence abroad?

Anyway, neither matter. Public charge is not a consideration for naturalization, and the US residence requirements apply at time of n400/oath, you can move wherever you want after you become a citizen.

my primary concern is, since I am applying to study in an overseas university, if I apply for the federal aid, does it mean that I have the intention to abandoning my primary residences in the U.S. and no longer meet the physical presence requirement.

Whether or not that matters depends on whether you want to do it before or after you become a citizen. Before, it matters. After, it doesn’t.

Well, First: you cannot finance your overseas study from FAFSA unless it is part of your US college program like a study abroad for one term. Second: your study outside US may indicate your abandonment of your US residency and you should be careful not to stay away for more than 6 months at one time.

That's not true. FAFSA does support a number of degree programs outside the US.

That was my understanding of FAFSA rules but somebody commented that this is not true, so I would suggest that you call FAFSA to get an official opinion. Good luck

Just go to the FAFSA website and search for schools, select "foreign country" under state and you'll see a list of schools they support. And yes, you can get degrees at these schools using FAFSA if they offer international programs that accept such fin aid.

Official student federal aid page for foreign study. The first bit is for semester/year abroad and the second and longer bit is for those getting entire degrees abroad.
