They don’t have a bar yet (that happens at 180 days of unlawful presence) but they also don’t have valid visas anymore and it may be very difficult to get new ones.

This is questionable, my mom stayed for a three days over because of the terrible hand writing error of the cbp agent  and returned home. She was able to come back for visit on the same visa with no issue and still able to renew her visa with no question.

I can't speak for her specific circumstances, but the law is clear that any overstay automatically terminates the visa.

Failure to depart the United States on time will result in being out of status. Under U.S. law, visas of individuals who are out of status are automatically voided (Section 222(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act).  Any multiple entry visa that was voided due to being out of status will not be valid for future entries into the United States.
