And can you travel overseas with that document?

Yes! But carry it together with the expired 2-year GC.

Why is it that some filers get extension letters and others don’t ?

It should be the same paper receipt notice. If you don't get it and have urgent international travel plans, then call USCIS and request an emergency appointment for I-551 stamp in your foreign passport:

Everyone is supposed to get the extension letter. If you don't have it, you can't prove that your GC has been extended for an extra 18 months. And yes it says in the letter that you need to use the letter PLUS your card (even if it's expired) as proof of employment authorization and for travel (technically, the letter and card are used to let you back into the country since the US does not record exits). I thought you already asked this question in the big thread about traveling with the extension letter and it was answered???

I believe all i- 751 filers should get a NOA stating that it extends the expiring greencard to 18 months unless application was rejected.  Otherwise you are here illegally when your greencard card expires.  Yes You can travel with the extension NOA

Update to my case for anyone on a similar timeline/service centre:

27th July: Sent via Fedex to TX

30th July: Fedex notification of receipt

5th August: $$ taken from account

6th August: USCIS text with receipt #

17th August: NOA letter received (TX service centre)

Waiting to hear about biometrics and checking the USCIS online account daily to see if I'll get a waiver. Good luck, everyone!

That is very incorrect. Expiration date is only for the document, not the status. INA is very clear that only an Immigration Judge can strip a GC holder of status.

Good point but Try telling the CBP officer that...

That is why I mentioned earlier:

Also, the worst I've seen CBP do (for example, if they believe a Resident has abandoned status after prolonged absence) to a Resident entering the US is to either refer them to an Immigration Judge OR convince the Resident to sign Form I-407 to formally abandon status. So again, if a Resident doesn't willingly sign I-407, only an Immigration Judge can strip a Resident of status.

I just wanted to read other experiences than yours, wanna make sure I don’t mess up in case I leave the country with an expired green card.

How would I know that they have applied the biometrics that I first got at the port of entry ? I see a lot of people saying applied online, what does that mean and how do I check that please ?

You can know from the online update, or from receiving a letter in the mail.

The website to check online is https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do

Just input your case number here to see your current status.
