What happens if US/Canada border stays closed for a while?

You've got quite awhile. We were DQ'd Jan 8th and were a month away from getting an interview date when the shutdown occurred.

The consulate could very well also be operating at less than 100% capacity when it reopens. You've likely got a very, very long wait ahead of you before the interview (6+ months minimum).

Instead of buying a house at first, if you want to establish intent to domicile, sign a lease with a family member. Get your approval, get to the US (by plane if land borders are still closed) and then buy a house.

Sounds like we will be waiting a while..we have thought about signing a lease in advance, might be our best option for the time being. Thanks and good luck to you.

When people suggest a year long border closure, it really does a number on my mental health...surely that's not feasible whatsoever?

I am feeling the same. But I think it is unfortunately feasible. The US covid cases are spiralling out of control and we're now seeing an average for 50, 000 cases per day. I'm starting to wish we'd applied for his Canadian pr instead.

Right now it’s not a good time to do anything in the US. I just moved here a week ago. I can’t get a SSN. I was told I need to meet certain criteria before they can make an appointment. I’m still waiting to hear back from them. Without SSN you can’t change driver’s license. Without license you can’t get car insurance. I might be able to get health insurance without SSN but I don’t know for sure. It’s quite difficult to get anything done. It’s better to stay put in Canada for now.

You can be put on your spouse's car insurance without a US driver's license. My husband added me to his as soon as we were married and I was living in Canada.

Hi,

It can confusing with all the uncertainty that's been going on, since the U.S.-Canada border is closed. I found a website that answers typical questions regarding how COVID-19 may affect Canadians ability to move to the U.S. Hope this helps: http://www.canadiansinusa.com/coronavirus/

Thanks for the info, every little bit helps!

A quick question

Is it mandatory 14-day quarantine requirement for those traveling into Canada?

Because i can book only a week trip.

Yes it definitely is a mandatory 14-day quarantine. From what I hear you even have to present a plan to them at Customs as to how you will be quarantined then you can proceed with your vacation. Not feasible but that's what they want.

Not from what I’ve heard but you might want to call Canada Border Patrol and just ask them the same questions and see what they say. I assume you would be flying to Canada since the land borders are closed for non essential business as they put it.
