Looking for my First Card as International College Student

Hi everyone!

I'm an incoming international college student that will be studying in California, and I plan to work/live here in the US after I graduate. I'd like to start building up my credit score. I've done some research and found that Capital One approves international students for cards, as well as Petal and TomoCredit. Thoughts on these options? Does anyone have experience with credit cards after moving to the US? 

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

On what basis will you be entering the US?  F-1 visa?

Senior Master Sergeant, US Air Force- Retired (after 20+ years)- Missile Systems Maintenance & Titan 2 ICBM Launch Crew Duty (200+ Alert tours)

Registered Nurse- Retired- I practiced in the areas of Labor & Delivery, Home Health, Adolescent Psych, & Adult Psych.

IT Professional- Retired- Web Site Design, Hardware Maintenance, Compound Pharmacy Software Trainer, On-site go live support, Database Manager, App Designer.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

How can you qualify for an F-1 visa with immigrant intent?  Hint:  You can't.....legally......visa fraud and misrepresentation are serious.

U.S. regulations require the Consular officer who considers your visa application to assume that you want to immigrate to or remain permanently in the U.S.  In order to qualify for an F-1 or J-1 visa, you must prove that your visit to the U.S. will be temporary in nature and that you will return to your country after completion of your activities here. ......."

I think the best course of action is to return to your country after your education........then you can seek a company to help you with an employment visa....that seems to be a legal path, imo.

 

There are legal paths if a person is already in the US........but entering the US via an F-1 or other non-immigrant route with the intent to stay is not legal....and you have stated that staying is your intent.

Lucky Cat is right; you can’t “move” to the US on a non-immigrant visa.

 

In addition, the work visas you referenced are currently suspended, and their future is uncertain.
