My friend needs to take the TOEFL but she's not very good or very fast at typing. She can read and write English better than she can type it. She rarely had access to a computer while growing up. The problem is that the closest test site that offers the paper test is in another state. Has anyone taken the computer based test and can you give me any insight? Is it to her advantage to travel to that other state? Or is there really no difference? I'd appreaciate your help. Thanks.

You can probably find someone who can give you an informed response if you post in a forum about TOEFL. Do a search for "toefl forum" (without the quotation marks), and you'll find a few.

Although not completely the same, I believe the GRE is easier to take on paper than computer. Once you answer a question on the computer, you can not go back, whereas you can correct on paper of course. I think it is the same set up with the TOEFL. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I recently took a professional test and opted for the paper and pencil version. That was great for me. (And I'd heard horror stories about the questions not scrolling up...etc).

I do believe that most TOEFL tests are paper/pencil, right?

last november i took the internet based toefl here in germany! you also have to take it on a computer, its just more up to date. the questions adjust to youre responses. if you answere stuff right, the computer will give you more diffucult question, if your answer is wrong the questions will get a little easier.

i dont think that you can stil take the paper based test! i heart they offer the computer based test for a little while longer but want to change everything to the internet based version!

If she's not comfotable with computers, I'd suggest traveling to another state to take a paper-based TOEFL... She'll have to write an essay in 30 minutes, and if she can't type fast, she may very well fail this part.
