Why is the governor of Texas telling people to stay home if there isn't a problem, and pausing the reopening?

He's a closet wimp.

Seroprevalence

Shocking!  Is this even legal?! :P

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

That completely excludes hospitalizations. Are you saying that only deaths matter? What about people whose lives are upended -- with possibly life-changing consequences -- by having to stay in hospital, perhaps in an ICU on a ventilator. Deaths are not the only metric that matters.

Ok, that was too broad of a generalization.  Of course there are serious cases that leave people crippled, or otherwise in need of further care.  My point was that as we test more, we will FIND more, and not because the disease is "getting worse".  There are already estimated millions that have had it but never tested for it.  At the end of the day, the majority of people who have had it recovered with no issues, and many had no worse than flu-like symptoms.  The more we learn about the disease, it will become clearer.  That's why I said deaths matter.  There is no recovering from terminal hypoxia, no chance of immunity.

Why is discounting hospitalizations appropriate?

Fear of public opinion/outrage.  If he stays open, and gets more new cases, while another state remains closed and gets a lower amount of new cases...   Political optics.

No it's never wimpy to want to protect yourself and others from harm.

Another coworker at the hospital went down today. There had been some concerns about their lack of adhering to the rules while on the property... so not surprising, but once again is putting my sister at risk. Manager casually txts to ''tell'' her to 'disinfect' the sick person's space. Oh my...

Or maybe he doesn't want more people dying. As you said, deaths matter.

He has today ordered bars to shut unless they serve food, and then it's takeout only. Restaurant capacity is being dropped from 75% to 50%. He's trying to stem a tide of cases, not look coronawoke.

The "optics" are pretty transparent at this point, along with the preferential exclusions for social justice. Inherent respect for any leader who ignores this deranged hysteria that has nothing to do with health and all to do with power.

Some point to a lack of enforcement for social distancing measures and masks. Yet California, a state of similar size and demographics, where Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom was far more aggressive in pursuing a shutdown than Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, has seen a case increase of about the same magnitude, which even started at about the same time as Texas.

Unemployment numbers can give us a sense of how widespread the shutdowns in each state were. Since February, California’s unemployment rate jumped 12.4 percent to 16.3 percent in May, while Texas’ saw an increase of 9.5 percent to 13 percent over the same period.

I know what's happening here. It's not good. This is why I stay indoors as much as possible and don't take unnecessary risks. I don't need to eat a burrito in a restaurant more than I need to keep healthy and help others stay healthy. I also do not see the economy as the sole metric for a state's success in controlling this virus.

I was trying to help those who don't know what's happening in Texas. And also, ultimately, that's an opinion piece, unlike the factual news reporting I posted. Do I need to find my Big Lebowski gif? I'm on my phone atm, so give me a moment.

Yeah, there is that little something regarding CA that was petty much still shut down, yet is experiencing more cases.  I suppose the excuse will be it is all imported.

So the cases are expanding in some states that reopened as well as some states under more restrictive orders.  How is that explained?
