We are all in the same situation. My husband been here since March 16th, and only received his GC. I do understand that many people may say that he is able to work with his 551 visa, but every job is asking for his SSN. When I call the SSN office they tell me he has to reapply for it, and that it has to be in-person (but again all there offices are close, God knows till when).

He was able to open a bank account with Chase. All he needed was two forms for ID (passport and GC) and proof of address ( the letter that the GC came in).

My husband arrived on August 13th and still has not received his green card or the social security card.  I'm not too concerned with he green card yet but the SS# has been asked for by many companies so I called last week and made an appointment.  We have a few close to us but I chose the one in Lancaster.  To speak to representative you press 0 and I was able to speak to someone over the phone.

His appointment was today and we were the only ones there (other than the workers).  The security guard was really nasty and tried to make us leave until one of the employees came over asking if my husband was Ahmed..LOL  They keep the door locked we had to wait outside until the guard let us in.

The appointment was quick and simple he entered everything in his system and said we were all clear and should have the card in at least two weeks.

We filled out to receive it at my address on the ds260 but my husband was not in their system.

Nop, it did not work.
They told me to call Immigration. I simply don't exist in their system and the request has to come from USCIS...

Great! Arrrfffffghhhhh! 😩

Ok, I called USCIS.

First I waited for an hour, then someone pick up but never said anything, I could hear someone working in an office, but nobody was talking to me. I waited for another 10min and then hung up.

Called back a second time, waited 1H20 (!!!) and then a person said that USCIS could not do anything, that I had to write to NVC. And that in any case, I would not receive my SSnumber before getting my greencard, which he reminded of, could arrive anytime between my arrival in the US (last month) and 120 days (4 months).

I wrote to NVC through their enquiry form "ASK NVC" on their website. Hope to get an answer "relatively" soon.

Anyone in the same situation?

Take care All 😉

Hello Freda,

The person I talked to at my local Social Security Office here in California said they were not taking any appointment, unless I was a refugee or any other dire reasons.

Will call again since I see it happens in other states. We'll see. Thanks for your feedback, it is very useful.

Take care,
Alix

Please keep us informed how it goes.

I have my green card but no SSN. I alled the SS office and they won't help me unless I have a job offer. I'm retired, so no, I don't have a job offer, but I would like to get a driver's license and for that I need a social security number. Also my husband is still to file the taxes for 2019 and he doesn't know how to do it without me having an SSN, it's too late to get an ITIN number now.

My wife called our local SS office and the lady said they want to see a employer job offer letter before doing anything else.

Social security is one of those things most people never think about until they are getting ready to retire. For some people the prospect of signing on for benefits is a daunting task and most do not know where to begin. That is where the site SSA-office.com comes into play. If you look for your local social security office or you need help to sign up for yourself or others SSA-office.com is here to help you with all these tasks.

Social security offices have to open at some point, right? My wife just got her green card in the mail but we don't want to send it, along with her passport, in the mail. One SS phone rep told us they "couldn't guarantee" we'd get them back. Different phone reps have told us different things. It doesn't give us much confidence. We need to get a local driver's license (we're in Illinois) and open a bank account. This is super annoying.

Hello everyone,

Some update  for me . I received my SSN this morning 😊

i am so relieved !
i had an appointment about two weeks ago  at my local SSA because I explained my health situation on the phone and they finally agreed to received me .The lady we were in contact with was very helpful and nice .

At the time of the appointment I had to give my passport , GC and the most recent prescription for my treatment To prove my health situation ( thyroïde issues )
They give me my papeworks back the same  day during the appointment .

If someone  here have a medical condition And a treatment , talk about it . It could help .

I hope  y’all will have soon your SSN because I know the stress of the wait and the fact that a lot of things are on Pause

( bank account, driver license etc )because of it .

good luck everyone 🙏🌺🤞💪🌼

How did you motivate getting the SSN because of your medical issues? Did you say you needed it for health insurance?

i told them that I needed my treatment My Monthly treatment .And that’s since 3 months I was without it because no SSN .and they understood after 2 weeks explaining that ..( to be short )

So That I need my SSN for health insurance yes . For me to be able to have my prescription without paying costly fees .
that’s what  I said .

ive been lucky to talk to someone understanding .

You got the green card? If yes...how long it took since POE...for me its nearly 5 months since POE and still waiting for green card..

5 months? If it pass 120 days then u definitely need to call uscis. In that case they will expedite your greencard . technically you did pay for it after all .
