Just enter your new address when paying the green card fee, also at POE confirm the new address when they process your spousal visa and stamp the passport.  My husband entered the US 10 months ago and gave the CBP officer our new address, that was enough to get it in the system so that his SS card arrived correctly one week later.  While waiting for his green card, I called USCIS to make sure that they had his new address in their system as well, and they did not.  So we filed an online change of address on the USCIS website and three months later his green card arrived.

So based on our experience, I recommend that you enter the new address when paying the green card fee, give the CBP officer the new address, then contact SSA and USCIS to make sure they have it too.  Good luck!

So I just paid the immigrant fee and created a myUSCIS account. When changing the address there, it says that changing address here is only the first step and an AR11 will have to be filed to complete the process. Do I need to file the AR11 as well or changing the address in the profile and informing the CBP official at POE will be sufficient?

Sidenote: I did not provide a mailing address when paying the fee as I was unsure whether to put a USA or Pakistani address there.

Well you should've put in your mailing address in the US (Why would they send it to Pakistan?). Give them the address and POE and upon arrival also do AR-11 once in the US.

Hi everyone,

I am planning to enter the US on an IR1 visa soon and my POE will be Dulles (Washington DC). Now my initial intended address I gave for SSN and GC delivery was in DC, however, things have changed a bit and I need to change that to an address in Illinois.

For this,

1. Who do I need to inform at the POE and will I have to give some justification?

2. I know that these address changes sometimes cause delays in SSN and GC delivery. What can I do at the POE to ensure (as much as possible) that everything is recorded and sent forward properly to avoid any delays?

Thanks in advance!

Get into the US first. Don't change it at the POE. Change it after you are told "welcome to America" and you are home.

Entered the USA with IAD as POE. Told the CBP officer my new mailing address. However, my myUSCIS account still shows the old address. Is that anything to be concerned about?

Did you also file a AR-11 with USCIS?    Also the sponsor probably needs to file a I-865 as well.

Congratulations and welcome to USA.

No we will file the AR-11. Will that solve this issue?

@carmel34 @milimelo I’ve called the SSA on their 800 number as well as the local office. Neither of them are able to verify the address change. They just keep saying that we only have records for people with SSNs. And don’t know of addresses for immigrant visas. Know what I should do? Whom to call? Or should I just assume that if the address has been successfully changed with USCIS, it would’ve been changed with SSA too?

SSA and USCIS are separate entities.  You can call USCIS to confirm that they have the new mailing address, that is where most people have problems so definitely call to confirm even if you submitted an AR-11.  SSA seems to be better about updating addresses for incoming immigrants, at least they were fine in our case, my husband gave the CBP officer a new mailing address at POE, and a week later his SS card arrived at our new address.  We did go into the local SSA office a couple of days after POE to try and confirm that they had his new address in their system, but they couldn't give us any information, so we just went home and hoped it would arrive at the house which it did.  So my advice is to call USCIS to confirm but don't worry about SSA.  Things could be slower right now as well with the virus.  Good luck and welcome to the USA!

Thank you! So I did call the USCIS to check if my address was updated after getting it changed by the CBP Officer at POE. And they did have the updated address. Do I still need to file the AR-11? Or I can let it be?

When in doubt do the AR-11.
