My buddy was t boned a few years ago. had over 200k in hospital bills, settled for 2k payment to hospital. You got to know how to work the system.

I had about a 12K emergecy room visit around 2003, got out and the hospital ate the whole bill.  Just went to my Dr. recently to get a B12 shot for energy, Ran it thru insurance they don't pay it, bill was like $180.  Finally paid $40 since no Insurance coverage.  Went back this week got another shot, only $25 total told them I was self pay.

There is really no right or wrong answer, unless you are prone to sickness or have poor health. Me I am healthy adult male.  I could afford 150k bill if I had to, but I am sure I could get it greatly reduced.

What if you get cancer? Pharmaceuticals don't offer those kind of rates...they come from the private companies, not really the provider.

I was a very healthy adult male (young adult, mind you...). The next day, I was informed I had months left and to take it one day at a time.

I was not prone to sickness by any means.

I have prepared myself for that.  If it was cancer of pancreas or brain or a deadly form, I would probably blow alot of money in few months and travel around the world partying if I was able, and then get in my car in the garage and have a few drinks and let it run with the garage door shut, and slowly ease out of here.

If it was rather curable I would spend my money trying to live, but wouldn't go crazy on it either if it didn't look good.

Hopefully I will never have to face that.  You know like I know, Your only here for a short while, might as well try to enjoy it.

Actually it is pretty smart.  I did this for many many years, I always was self pay (Cash) and got super deals on medical services, much  cheaper in the long run.

"Cheaper in the long run"  ?  Sorry, but that is utter BS.  Do you know how much a round of radiation therapy costs?  Most people don't have a spare $150k laying around to pay cash for that.  And no hospital will negotiate that fee down to something affordable.

You would not be able to do this.  You seem pretty naive about cancer and medicine/health care in general.  Even young people get cancer and chronic diseases.

What would you do for insurance if you were in a traumatic car accident or needed an emergency appendectomy?

Good luck with that.  Some of the drugs I administer to my patients are >$10k per dose.

Yikes!   So true though.....    we give drugs that are generically manufactured and have been around for 40 years as well as fancy new molecules that target cell proteins.  The Yugo vs the Ferrari of chemotherapy!

Folks, some expressions here are rather heated -- let's disagree without being disagreeable, please.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Someone can choose not to have healthcare.  However the new I-944 needed with AOS is requesting this information due to costs with healthcare and the privatized nature of the US healthcare system.  For the OP, most people choose to get married, which is a qualifying event, and added onto healthcare asap.  While you can add someone without an SSN it's a lot of work, so if you can get that asap, do it.

That sounds like a crime against humanity. The one who is wrong is the person charging $10k a dose, not the one who doesn't want to fork over money to an insurance corporation. Especially since medical care is free in every civilized country on earth.

I guess that depends on what you call a civilized country, Cuba?

I have been to 30 ish countries and none had free medical care.
