The DC office for was taking 12 months for 50 percent of cases to be approved but now it seems to be taking only 8.5 months, which is 3.5 improvement. I just saw the update and now I am finding this reduction in processing time to be universal across all USCIS offices.Anyone know why?

some days it rains some days it doesn't, there's no rule that says it's always this set time frame, processing times always fluctuate, next month it could slow down.

This is just my theory:

USCIS personnel focused on processing paperwork.  Up until a couple weeks ago, they didn't have to deal with the public, attend office meetings, chit chat by the water fountain, etc.   Under lockdown, not much to do other than work on the case files.

That dog doesn't hunt.

Service centers do the initial case review and they don't ever deal with the public at anytime.   Field offices do the final interviews, which hasn't been happening because the offices have been closed to the public.   So that should be actually extending the time to process not shortening

YMMV

And what about those I-485 where the field offices never re-opened? In Tucson where we live it is still closed. Does that mean even longer wait for my husband’s GC to get approved?

Is your application ready to schedule interview ?

Only field offices reporting still closed are in NYC.   Field offices are prioritizing naturalization ceremonies and applications.  Other types of applications are going to wait a little longer

YMMV
