How backed up is USCIS right now?

USCIS is not backed per se.  The consulates are way backlogged

There is no benefit to wait.  Wait times go up, wait times go down.  It's the government.

Waiting only makes your wait longer.... If you are ready to immigrate and have a qualifying sponsor it doesn't make sense to wait.

Go ahead and file. Things could speed up, you never know, and at least you'll have that set of paperwork done and in process and off your desk.  Take your time, read the instructions carefully, and go for it.

Very, as it has been for a few years. 

 

In normal conditions, the time it takes for your case to be processed is a matter of luck. You can find numerous posts from people reporting cases before and after them being processed, while theirs remain untouched. 

 

As the other members have advised, the moment to file is NOW.

I think OP's quandry highlights the unease that comes with wondering how long things might take, and worries related to getting part way there, and then getting stalled, and having to possibly redo/update various documents or examinations (medical, etc.), flights get delayed or outright cancelled, etc.

So, the uncertainty of the timing, and the concomitant mental,  and potential procedural and financial risks, makes one wonder...."Might it be better to wait till things settle down?" Yeah, I can see that. Times ain't normal, that is for sure.

 

Waiting till another/later time won't get them here sooner, clearly, but it might make for a smoother VISAJOURNEY experience! No pun intended. Okay, maybe a little intended.

Could use the time to make sure the relationship is still "viable". 

 

It looks bad for everyone who tried to time their immigration for anytime after march of this year.   No one can control the future.  File now, immigrate as soon as you can is what I always say.

 

OP's fiance has a fear that this isn't a good political climate for Russians to immigrate.

Your question is completely reasonable; we were shocked that we actually got an oath date considering all the closures. I can't imagine the trepidation with someone just beginning this process, gosh.

I'd go ahead and file, but be careful and take your time with the forms, ask questions until you're satisfied with your application, and then be sure you make copies of everything you send, so you'll know exactly what they've got.

Thank you! I'm only confused about the questions that say to answer only if something is true, but then in the instructions it says to put N/A or None in in things that don't apply to us. In the PDF file it won't let me enter slashes in most of those places

You can just put NA or None. It'll be fine
