So I finally got my EAD card, which is great. But SSA offices are closed for who knows how long. The different name on social is already causing problems with not having able to do dmv stuff online or filing taxes, getting employed etc.. I read that one way is to mail them all the original documents including my EAD card which is INSANE and way too risky. I can't believe this is the only way to change one name in a piece of a card. I am so desperate that I might even consider it, but if my EAD card would get lost I don't think what I would do, probably go mad. Is there anyone who actually did this and succeeded? And what I understood I am just to mail to documents to the field office, thats it? I think I would much more like to wait but I don't know if thats wise either.. There is absolutely no information about when the offices should open.

You can still file taxes. Just file with the name on SSN. After getting the new one you can update with IRS. For the other ones, you can try using the marriage certificate as prove of name change or just wait until they reopen.

I wouldn't send my originals.

When your names don't match on your documents i.e., green card or EAD and your SS card it can be a real problem doing anything as your names MUST match all your IDs (at least in my state), coupled with the virus situation and all the SSA offices being closed it forces us to do things we would NOT normally do. I also sent my wife's original documents GC SS card and marriage license to our LOCAL SSA office via USPS we sent it certified registered return receipt mail.

As our local office is just around the corner the documents got there within a day or so. Keep in mind that some local SSA offices might have certain days when they will receive mail our office was Monday, Wednesday and Friday ( I did not know this before hand) needless to say the documents arrived and processed and as the local SSA office said they did return the documents to us safe and sound, but they did not use any form of tracking or certified mail. Had I known that it might of changed our minds about sending the documents. We were on pins and needles until the documents were returned ( we did not have to submit a passport though only the GC, SS card SS card application and the marriage license to verify the name change.

Some offices in some states are doing limited special face to face appointments, some like my office is closed tighter than a drum. No telling when the offices might open for regular face to face business again and we could not just sit back and wait so we went for it. It worked out fine. This will be a decision best made by you I can only give you our experience. Were we leery, yes very, were we scared YESSSS very scared, but we chose to suck it up and go for it, as you will have to decide. It's a gamble yes of course it is!!!!

Thank you for sharing your story. How long did it take for the original documents get back to you again? I think I will call my office (I am in CA) and see if I can get an appointment. If not, I might have to do it this way. I just don't know what to do if the documents would get lost , and the EAD right now is my only ID (passport is with the old name)

It took exactly 1 week (7 days) to get the documents back, but again  our local office only receives and sends out mail on Monday, Wednesday and Friday due to covad. I do understand your reluctance believe me I do. Keep us posted. If you mail them make double sure you get the correct address to your local office  and send certified return receipt through USPS. Also  make a copy your SSC and EAD.
