Has anyone thought that USCIS could also manually extend processing times so people are not able to inquire about their cases?

I'm guessing the volume of case inquiries has been through the roof lately. And if the processing can take up to 3 years - the applicant technically cannot start a case inquiry until their case ages 3 years...

Hanlon's razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Changing the process to calculate inquiry dates is a process in itself. It's not like somebody just says "make them all about 3 years", or "make them all based upon x instead of y". This isn't a private business where somebody in power just makes a decision and makes everybody implement it instantly. These are items set by processes, subject to internal and external reviews.

USCIS does provide transparency on how they calculate processing timelines. It's not exactly exciting reads so it doesn't make the news or anything, but they do provide the info upon request and investigation. It's not something they are hiding.

It's also accounted for in DHS and OMB reports, including average time spent per form type, backlogs by form type, estimates of expected load, etc.

https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/sites/default/files/research/how_uscis_estimates_application_and_petition_processing_times.pdf

https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDHS/bulletins/1e6fcec

Depending on form type, they either use an older model of "the agency simply posted the date of the application/petition most recently completed", "inside/outside processing goals" (not sure if any are still even using this...), or a newer model based upon cases completed within the 50th and 93rd percentiles.

Edit: Also this is a good read: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/USCIS/Resources/Ombudsman Liaison/Responses to Annual Reports/cisomb-2016-annual-report-response.pdf

The OPQ is responsible for much of this type of information, and provides their findings, including via public teleconference calls.

Issue with this is now USCIS governs itself with our fees (bad as it is)  do you want the federal government provide the budget and take over?

it's a no win situation from what i see

and seems anytime an organization wants fee increases (like USCIS has asked for),  they come up with scare tactics asking for a huge amount (2 or 3 times what they want) and we,  the people,  give them what they really want ( in this case the new increase in fees) and its a ploy to manage the system

Sorry, I must say right now, if you're truly naturalized, you have no real reason to start asking people to not email their congressmen to sort this out, you are not going through the pain of a possible extra year of waiting for an i-130 approval, a process that generally takes 12 months on its own. (Yes I truly believe COVID-19 won't be gone until next year)

That's not to dismiss your opinion but the truth of the matter is that you got over the hurdle, these people haven't... You are with your SO right now (or were with), these people face the possibly of being separated for another year. It's a different type of mindset you put yourself in when stressed and upset like that, I know you probably remember it judging by how delayed your process was. These people haven't faced that breath of relief yet.

I wish they would just accept expedite payments. I'd gladly pay more to start my life with my spouse sooner (cr-1). I just hope the USCIS doesn't hold petitioners hostage and make them protest to the govt to get more funding.

This hasn't been an option in Family Visas.

Unfortunately USCIS is not funded by the government.  It's services are self funded with the user fees that are charged.  Unfortunately there haven't been any increases to cover the costs.  USCIS has tried to reduce costs by closing the international field offices and shifting some work for exceptional circumstances back to the consulates.  So hopefully USCIS can get a loan from the government but remember that congress would control the funding.

They do. For a low price of 500,000 dollars, you can do a EB-5 Visa and have a green card in 6 months max. I heard it was going up to 900,000 dollars though, so better jump on it Quickly.

Well they are going to furlough employees which could potentially cause everyone's case to be delayed indefinitely. It's already about the money, I wish we had some power to do something to make things faster.

The furlough is reportedly due to a +60% decline in cases due to COVID-19. If cases (and their fees) are not coming in, then a reduction of staff is expected.
