Getting ss card while on cr1 and covid

My wife entered us on cr1, we havnt gotten ssn or green card yet even though we checked marked on application in visa process and paid all the fees. I know it can take time for green card.

   But for ssn, i have seen many people had to apply personally even though they checked marked in application and i am fine doing it , But problem is social security offices are closed to public. And my wife wants to find job and make driving license and we want to file together for tax returns jointly for 2019.

   In this case i called ss office and they want me to mail origional passport to the address of ss office here in my city. They are not asking to direct it to any person or department just to the address of social security office along with application. Now we are worried what if passport is lost in this process, what if we dont recieve it back, given they want origional passport ir green card. Since we dont have green card what if we lose only evidence of her lawful presence. 

   What should you guys suggest me to do. Filing jointly for 2019not only will put us in lower tax bracket but also we may be able to qualify some of stimulus checks that gov is handing over.

    Should i just mail the original passport? What happens if it is lost, that has stamp on it?

You can always file an extension that gives you until October to file

I wouldn’t mail the original passport but rather wait for SSN to arrive or go to the office once they open. As suggested, you can file for extension for 2019 tax return. You wouldn’t lose the stimulus regardless. If you don’t get it this year, you’ll get credits during 2020 tax return.
