It's purely about opportunism. Just like how abusive men tend to be lured to weak/compromised women, these sociopaths are keen to when society is weak/compromised and are more likely to prefer a methodical approach until they get their way, then foot on the throat. Now that we're in the latter, it becomes a Milgram type experiment and how weak people will advance (be obedient to) things they know are dangerous and contravene all logic and norms just to avoid the cognitive dissonance.

 

It can actually affect the outcome of the election if weak people (who tend to be in the independent and moderate segments) really believe that its hopeless to fight. This is why the left, the media, try and use polls, and other methods of demoralization, either to reduce participation against them, or flat out coerce people to join.
