long story short, this happened 2 months before my B2 visa interview and I couldn’t cancel and I went ahead to attend the interview since the purpose of my trip at the time was important. (I was working for the Lagos state government and they needed me to attend a conference)

You lied about being married to increase your chances of B2 approval when you were going on a Nigerian govt sponsored trip to attend a conference in the US? None of this adds up. If it doesn't sound right to us on VJ, it's really not going to work for a CO.

It adds up perfectly. Perhaps you’ve not been sponsored by an African government on a foreign trip before. I have, twice. It is not equivalent to traveling on a diplomatic passport. Despite the government sponsorship you still have to prove you are eligible for the visa on your own merits. He lied that he was married because it helps show close ties to Nigeria.

Just another random guy from the internet with an opinion, although usually backed by data!

That is not a document proving termination of marriage.  Consulate officer know all the tricks and lies.......We normally never find out how (or if) these misrepresentation cases are resolved.....please keep us updated.

Wrong. Consulates get fooled a lot and they will admit to you. That’s one reason we have millions of overstayers here.

Beg to differ on this. In my country,  those government officials are "important" folks. Whenever there's a government sponsored trip, all they'll do is collect all their passports in one go and send a government secretary who's tasked with visa aquistion to the embassy to get the visas on their passports. So whether single or not, it doesn't matter. They will get the visa.

Proof? Look at how many officials went to support the current VP and President when they had cases at the Hague in 2014. They had nothing of importance to do at the Hague but go there and make noise, fool of themselves, stay in expensive hotels at the expense of taxpayers and frequent the Red district 24/7. If none of the athletes in my country personally goes to the embassy to apply for a visa, do you think a "whole important MP / government official" will? Kenyan government officials are "so important."

Just a point to note difference...not one to discredit your own points..

The visas you're using as an example are A, issued to Diplomats and Foreign Government Officials. Due to the nature and restrictions of those visas, an individual interview is not needed -therefore the process of passport collecting and such-.

Of which the OP was. And was going for government business abroad. So ideally, his passport was to be submitted on his behalf. If that's the case, then his story is false because he didn't have to do anything but just give out his passport. Understood?

Nonetheless, I understand your point and I know those visas. My original message was also to explain that even the tiniest of government officials - Members of County Assembly in Kenya - want to be treated like "kings/ queens" and wouldn't apply for visas personally. Specific to Kenya, they want to be holding press conferences left, right and center of which they have nothing of importance but just wanna be on TV. Next, they'll take 20 mins to say a 2 mins thing. They want police chase cars, personal drivers and go to bank taking loans because they are now government officials and have easy access to these things. Even if not going on government business, they still want to be treated like important people and respected.

The OP applied for a B visa (tourism/business), not an A visa, meaning it was not an official matter. He might have been a government employee, not necessarily an official.

And a hint on the behavior you describe that applies to any government: in order to justify huge budgets -and/or avoid cuts-, they tend to add the most useless "official matters" and include people that might not be relevant, basically to inflate the bill and have evidence that more money is needed. Do people take advantage/abuse the situation? Of course they do. Most humans seek fame and fortune. Here, there and everywhere.

If they want a B visa there is no sending a flunky, they need to do it themselves.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Fair point. This is a healthy discussion we had.

Hi, do you think if I give the CO the death certificate of my last marriage they won’t ask of any divorce certificate from the first marriage ?

They ask for proof of termination of ALL marriages, whether it be by death or divorce.  I'm surprised this wasn't noted at the petition stage.

they get stuck with fictitious marriage???

And are inadmissible for US visas in the future due to obtaining a material benefit while lying under oath.  Many here on VJ have shown why it is not the smartest tactic.

That's the worst ever as most times they can't even divorce the fictitious spouse

It's the new norm in my country......thereafter, comes the "Certificate of singleness or Bachelor's certificate," a certificate which:

1. Never been heard of in my country until US immigration is involved. Infact, it doesn't even exist. No unmarried Kenyan holds such nor has ever held such.

2. Is just a patch, devised to try and salvage a sinking ship.

3. Will have all necessary and authentic stamps, courtesy of forgery artist on the streets of Nairobi.

Lastly, I tend to believe US Embassy Nairobi already know about this game.

😂😂😂Number 3 you should know people in the high places.

Hello everyone, my fiancé and I are applying for a k1 visa . And now I am worried because 3 years ago  (April, 2017) I applied for a b2 visa in Nigeria, and the visa was denied. In that same year (August 2017) I actually got married to another woman in Europe and the marriage didn’t work out and before we could file and finalize the divorce she got sick for over 1 year and during that period we was already separated, unfortunately she passed away in January 2020, and in February I proposed to my fiancé.

now I am worried because in my previous visa application I lied that I was married, and now that I actually got married and my ex wife passed away and I have all legal documents to proof that my ex wife is dead, do you guys think that the LIE in my previous B2 application is gonna be relevant ? I am really worried about this and I would be really grateful to get positive feedbacks.

PS: I and my fiancé have been together for 1 year and we have seen each other twice, and we have another trip coming up as soon as we are all safe to travel.

Let me tell you this; if you treat this situation normally, this situation will treat you abnormally.
