To date, 77% of drivers say they will refuse loads to cities with disbanded or defunded police departments.

Here are some of their responses:

“…if something was to happen and you have to take matters into your own hands, and then you risk being prosecuted for protecting yourself.”

“This is not an area you need to act fearless and think you you’d look like a fool for saying no…Imagine what kind of fool you look like for driving into a hot spot and putting your life in danger.”

“I will not deliver to an area with a disbanded police department. My life matter and I do this for my family. We are already at the mercy of these towns and cities with laws and hate against us for parking, getting a meal or even using a restroom.”

“Simple. We may not like it all the time, but laws and order is necessary.”

“Most places we go already can be dicy an about only time you see a cop is when lights is on behind you.”

“For my own safety and security of my customers’ loads, I have already informed my dispatcher that I will refuse all loads to cities that have defunded their police departments.”

Looks like supply chains will be looking very different if the left continue down this "no police" path.

    As we have often seen, answers given when responding to anonymous polls don't always correlate well with reality. Not all drivers have the option to refuse (without consequence), but even among those who do, there will always be someone who wants to make money.  As long as somebody is paying enough for deliveries, somebody will be willing to deliver.

i'm sure the insurance companies will have a bigger say so than if they have drivers willing to risk it.

    Camden, NJ de-funded their police department 7 years ago. They are not having delivery issues. There is no insurance premium associated with driving to Camden.

The city, home to a population about 17% of Minneapolis' size, dissolved its police department in 2012 and replaced it with an entirely new one after corruption rendered the existing agency unfixable.

Moreover, Minneapolis and Seattle are two vital western supply hubs, not only for goods back and forth to/from the N/NW US, but also western Canada. 

 

Camden is merely an old suburb of Philadelphia and not a major supply route. In that region, NE Philly (toward the airport/Trenton) is the major hub, so Camden defunding police (<- in theory, since they don't have no police force) won't have any major effect on anything. Seattle and/or Minneapolis would.

 

And because I know truckers aren't kidding around when they say they won't work in these cities, companies would rather move their warehouses to more business friendly regions around there like Coeur D'Alene, Fargo, Twin Falls, Bozeman/Butte, than risk their supplies like that.

Yeah, I don't understand why people don't actually know what "defunding" means here. It's a dumb phrase because it doesn't actually go to what it means -- getting police forces to focus on doing the actual work of the police, rather than doing work that can be handled more appropriately by social workers and mental health advocates (amongst other people). The "defunding" means moving some of the budget from the police to fund expansion of these kind of "street teams."

 

Today, I got to see this in action. I was in downtown LA, going on a long walk while Al was having physical therapy. I was passing by one of the big luxury loft complexes, when I saw something that looked..... off. I saw two women with their dogs, chatting, but as I got closer, I saw that one of them kept rapping on the window of an Uber. I overheard Woman 1 say that she was walking past and saw the guy slumped over the wheel. Woman 2 was trying to peer in as I reached them, and I asked what was happening, and could I help. Woman 2 said it looked like the driver had maybe OD'd, there was foil and a lighter next to him. I asked if I should call 911, and they both as one said no! We're calling the BID. Who are the BID? They're these guys: https://downtownla.com/the-dcbid/safe-and-clean/safety-team  The women told me that for these kind of things, the BID know what to do and can get the man help. Getting the cops involved, I was told, will actually slow down medical assistance and expose the driver -- who for what it's worth was actually safely and legally parked -- to possibly getting charged with a crime. "This guy needs help," Woman 1 told me. "He doesn't need to go to jail for this." A BID team member was over within 5 minutes and the ambulance wasn't far behind. I was pretty impressed. There were peaceful demonstrations happening downtown and the police need to be at those -- not dealing with a guy who OD'd in his Uber.

 

Now I am certain that there are people who want NO police at all. These are NOT the majority of people who think that the police should be focusing on doing policework rather than being, as I saw it referred to today online, the equivalent of gym teachers -- called on to fill in the gaps in a city's services, whatever that gap might be. There are people who can DO these other jobs, often at less expense and usually with more appropriate training. They also know when escalating to police officers is appropriate.

words have meaning.  when someone says defunded, that  means no money allocated for the police.  which means no police as the police must be paid.

perhaps "refocused" would be a better term to use?
