Hi everyone,

This may seem a strange question but after your I-130 is processed and you receive a notice from the National Visa Center (NVC), how much time do you have to pay the fees? Basically, we want to stall and not start processing the immigrant visa as all flights out of China to the US are currently banned and Covid is surging in the US. I already wrote the NVC and they said I need to pay the fees to continue processing the visa which didn't answer my question at all. Once we pay the fees, is there a time lag during the document collection phase? Is there much time between paying the fees and then getting the consulate interview schedule? Does anyone know of a way to defer or delay the immigration visa? We are now planning to leave next year (June 2021) as we can do nothing right now to move.  Thanks for any and all advice and information in advance!

to continue the processing , yes,  but if you want to stall,  not paying now is the best way

my letter said to notify NVC once a month by letter, call or email to keep case open a year ( that was back in 2014 and things do change )

but our case was a year at this stage of the process

Communicate by email or online actions such as fee payment once a year.  You can then stall as long as you like.  However, you are unlikely to have an interview in Guangzhou in 2020 because of the current backlog anyway, so I wouldn't stall more than a month or two.  The visa is valid for six months from the date of the medical.  Medical will just a few days before visa interview, at most.

If Guangzhou opens now and stays open, and you proceed with haste now, you are still not likely to have an interview in the next 6 months.  They have to catch up all the cancelled interviews, all those entering the queue since the shutdown, and all those entering between now and when you enter the queue.
