California health insurance

Hi everyone.  I know health insurance is a very common topic, but after a long while searching, i still don't know the answer.

Myself (USC) and husband and kids will all be moving from Australia to CA.    Kids are USC, husband is a IR-1 visa.  I potentially have a job lined up but not sure when it'll start.  In the meantime, I want to get the kids up to date with vaccinations, and just be covered until my job insurance starts.  Has anyone used any short term insurance in CA? I don't want to be locked into a long plan, and from what I read, CA doesn't have short term? I thought about starting with a medi-cal type one, but I don't think will cover him...I'm not sure what to do! or if I can do any of this from abroad before we get there?

Your husband can not get medicaid. The US citizens are Eligible if you meet the requirements (assets and income). Be careful with “short term plans” it’s very possible they do not cover immigrants (but rather for travel purposes only). I’ve never heard of a short term plan for a citizen but only for traveling purposes. Your best bet is to go to healthcare.gov and purchase a plan there. You have only 60 days to purchase it once immigrating to US. You can always drop whatever you purchase and switch to your employee based insurance once you have a job. Also- it may be cheaper to obtain the vaccinations in Australia so I’d look into that.

Look into the ACA marketplace.   You would qualify for special enrollment due to the move.  You can cancel the coverage when you get employment based coverage

YMMV
