They revoked that statement and its completely untrue.  I know loads and loads and loads of asymptomatic people tested positive.  I can't write full details write now, but will later.

I haven't seen any quotes to suggest that the WHO actually backed down on their statement, apart from what some editors have added to their own coverage. But there is actual data to back up the WHO statement: (https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.10.20097543v2.full.pdf )

 

"Our estimates of the proportion of asymptomatic cases and their transmission rates suggest that asymptomatic spread is unlikely to be a major driver of clusters or community transmission of infection, but the extent for pre-symptomatic and minor symptomatic transmission remains unknown.'

 

See the bottom of page 8 of that study for a summary of the data. So while such transmission can occur, it does not seem to be enough to justify a shutdown, and a shutdown of healthy people distracts us from more important measures such as staying at home when sick instead of relying on useless cloth masks.

The WHO "walked it back" by saying "hey, we just don't know yet" rather than saying that asymptomatic/presymptomatic people can't pass it on, which is what Dr. Van Kerkhove's quote was taken as saying by many. It was a clarification to dissuade people from throwing caution to the wind.

 

Where does the report say on page 8 that the transmission rates of asymptomatic persons do not justify a shutdown? I genuinely cannot see that.
