President Donald Trump’s directive to pull 9,500 troops from Germany hits home hard for friends of America like Edgar Knobloch, whose Bavarian town has been home to U.S. service members for seven decades.

Like Chancellor Angela Merkel, the mayor of Grafenwoehr was caught off guard by the latest sign of the U.S.’s deteriorating ties with a loyal ally.

amusing.  i remember a time when the germans wanted the us to remove all of the troops only to find that the local economy was decimated after that happened.

If you look at underlying issues of this then you can see that this is a long time coming. Trump has said repeatedly that he would Germany to raise the defense spending up to the 2% minimum according to NATO standards. I think the only countries contributing smaller than Germany's are the smaller countries like Belguim, Luxembourg, Slovenia. The two about the same size or bigger contributing smaller is Canada and Spain. The

While next door you have Poland is actually encouraging the US to put MORE troops into the country. They even called one of their bases Fort Trump

and poland is much more welcoming and not making life and operations difficult for the us forces by trying to tax any us contractors that work in germany.

Not to mention we have to have a certain amount of workers on base be German and the US pays a ####### ton in local/state taxes to the German government.

for those who don't know what i am referencing, it is TESA - Technical Expert Status Accreditation - which makes a technical expert jump through all kinds of hoops and paperwork to avoid german taxes.

I have never spent time in Germany beyond a stop back and forth from Iraq. But many people I work have lived in Germany as military and DOD civilians

I was stationed in Germany in the late 70s, the mark was quite strong vs the Usd, every time the usd rebounded above 2 to 1, the German govt would flood the market with usd and drive the price down, made it tough living an an e4 salary

I always wanted to go to Germany if I joined the Army. But I joined the Marines instead and I became a REAL MAN😀

my dad, who was navy, said i could not join the marines as my parents were married.

Mother has the distinction of being the only of her siblings born there because family was allowed to join grandfather who was stationed in Bayern (Bavaria). 

 

At any rate, I thought Trump was a dangerous unstable warmongering madman who couldn't be trusted with the nuclear codes/button. Now downsizing US foreign presence in a first world country is deemed bad. 🤔

Well that's the same thing with Mattis tbh with you. Trump wanted to pull troops out of Syria and Mattis said "if you do then I resign".

Not a big fan of him to be honest. I think people switch alot because they get tired of how much heat they get from the public.
