Today we are having new carpet put into our Home, the carpet guys came over today and They didn't speak a word of English, But they are Hard workers, I am not sure about their immigration status I know the company is reputable bonded / insured. I hired the company not the installers, I am not sure if the carpet companies insurance covers workers who are not legally in the country. When we were shopping for carpet we made sure they had adequate insurance to cover any damage they may cause ect.. Their policy is solid so i would hope it requires the installers be legally eligable to work in the USA legally in order to be covered by their insurance.

They probably are here on H1B's, or if it is a mutinational carpet fitting company perhaps they got transfers L1B Carpet Fitters of Exceptional Standing?

Insurance is taken out by Companes to protect them, not you.

It is to protect their legal liability.

If the policy did require for example employees to be legal, then it would be of no benefit anyway by the sound of it. Not that I have ever heard of such a requirement.

Reminds me of a local book signing, guy had written a book about the local quarry industry. Anyway he had a page about H2B and how most of the workers who worked in the quarries were on it.

I asked him how come the quarries seemed to have the whole of Colorado's allocation, especially when I thought most were used by the ski indiustry.

And how come no mention of the ICE raid a few years back.

He said that he would not have been able to write the book without the co-operation of the quarry owners....

Insurance probably doesn't give a damn as it covers their liability, not your floors. I'm not sure where you'd expect the visa status to come from. Like Boiler said, it's not like there's a visa class for carpet installers (or most nonskilled labor, generally.)

A question for those not asking: you gonna be comfortable with a punish-the-employer law that gets you on the hook for hiring illegals?

No. I do all my own landscaping, and the company that mows/weedeats/edges the lawn hires only people who are here legally authorized to work here.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

i have landscapers, i wouldnt dream of asking the owner if he employs illegal aliens, nor has it even crossed my mind to question it. :star:

that is a big part of the problem. too many people looking the other way.

What are you expecting the employers going to say? "why YES I do!"

I am sure 1/2 them don't even know if their employees are really illegal or not.

My husband and I do the landscaping and yardwork here, although we hire a lawn maintenance service to do the fertilizing and weeding. So far all of their employees have been American sounding English speaking non-hispanic looking individuals. Not sure about the tree service people we used last year to take down a tall dying pine tree though . . . the actual forester who climbed the tree was American - and his wife is Canadian here legally - but his helpers were all hispanic looking and Spanish speaking. No idea if they were legal or illegal. There are also a lot of Spanish speaking hispanic looking construction workers building new homes in our community. Once again, no idea if they are legal or not- but boy, they sure do work hard.

If enough people would ask, the employers would start to think twice.
