Lattouf said the forum is another example of how the way a woman looks are “deemed as important if not more important than her skills [and] her intellect”.

“It plays into this 1950s view that women should be seen and not heard and that idea of keeping pretty for a male gaze.”

...

As a result of receiving death threats and vicious trolling due to her work, Lattouf said she also makes a conscious effort to ensure that nothing posted is “incriminating and that it will be used against me and my kids”.

“For me it’s unfortunately just reinforcing how careful women need to be. We’ve got to be extra careful on the streets and extra careful online.”

As someone who had a provocative image of her posted online without her consent, this is something I feel very strongly about. For me, it was a deeply humiliating experience. I was able eventually to get it taken down, but the pain lasted a long, long time after it was gone, especially because I had given that picture to someone I thought I could trust. If you have never been reduced to simply what you look like, dehumanized simply because you happen to look a certain way and made to feel unsafe because of it... you can't know how violating it can feel. It didn't matter that the comments were "positive" like these women's were -- the true Layla was insignificant. I was hair and cleavage and lips and legs and nothing more. I had no worth except my sexual currency then.

Just thought we could do with talking about something else for a while.

How can the images be private of they are out there in cyberspace?

If you dont consent to share them.  I've had photos that I've taken used by websites without reference. They have to take them down. Copyright. If you take the photo, you own it unless you sell the original.

While true, I'd wager that 99.3875% of all photos on the internet have no copyright attached to them.  At least not in the social media realm.  I have photographer friends who go to the trouble, but not the average web user.

I've also had photos taken from me that were copyright. Unfortunately that didn't matter when scammy Chinese 'companies' on dodgy websites took images to sell on products. There wasn't a lot I could do to stop it besides getting a lawyer. I've also had to get into it with people who thought it was okay to take my images and use them for their websites, ask later, and then get huffy at me when I said no. But it can still be a difficult argument to make without serious lawyer power when people creating works (poetry, images, short stories, and images) host them on sites that aren't owned by them even if those sites claim to offer mild protection. Seen big and small companies just use or destroy stuff.

Still if a woman wants ultimate protection against their 'naughty pictures' - the answer really is don't take them and don't share them to anyone. The risk is too great.

Timeline

this is just another form of harassment of people one disagrees with.

earlier this week i saw a doxxing post on a local neighborhood watch group of a local business guy.  (no not what the neighborhood watch page is for).

i contacted the business owner and let him know about it, as his facebook page showed he has at least 3 children under 12 years old

when i told him about it, he said his crime was for saying "all lives matter" and that post was up for about 15 minutes and he then erased it.

from what i found, some gal that i'd characterize as trailer park trash took offense to his post, captured it, and started spreading it.  someone in

our local area then shared the picture (i guess they are either facebook friends or belong to the same social justice facebook group).

neither one of the two doxxing this guy know him.  but in my conversation with him, he pointed out (and yes i did look later on and confirmed it)

that he has a biracial daughter.
yet people don't care, they just get outraged because someone isn't being part of the echo chamber.  he thanked me for the heads up and he

is alert to the fact that someone may try something stupid.

it is sad that one cannot speak his or her mind and diverge from the group think model without someone deciding to up the ante by taking such

passive aggressive actions - which essentially are a call to vigilante justice.

I agree. Copyright is very difficult to enforce without spending $$ and you cant hve a photo shared that you never sent or took.

They inherently all have copyright, enforcing it is another story.

It's a lesson I learned the hard way. You think you can trust someone you're engaged to and have known for a long time not to betray that trust, but ultimately it comes down to a character issue. I didn't put the image on the internet myself, I sent it via email. It wasn't stolen so much as exploited. For that reason every picture I've ever shared since then of myself is G-rated.

But deeper than my own experience, what is it in these men that makes them think they are somehow entitled to dissect images of women this way? I'm not talking about appreciating what a woman looks like, that's not my issue. I'm talking about why "appreciation" veers into exploitation and denigration of the woman as a human by focusing only on how "hot" or not she is. What can we do to try to help boys from participating in this culture? It doesn't advance equality, which really does benefit everyone in the long term.

agree that it is a character issue - from what i recall about your statements in the past, i took his actions as being more of showing off to his buddies about how proud of the woman he was with

and an attempt to garner praise for being such a stud - more of just a measuring contest and bad judgment on his part instead of being malicious.

however, i for one, would like to see more pictures of your sammiches.   :)

Anyone who believes that a private account of any type is, and will always remain, private and can't copied is quite naive.  I have learned two things:

1) I make money proving hardly anything, in the public domain, is secure

2) There are unflattering pictures of my kano face / body / butt out there that can never be taken back :)

Even items on a computer aren't secure.  If you have something you want to keep secure do not connect it to a network of anykind.

There's a visit to the grocery store today and a fresh loaf of bread in the breadbox so maybe. :) Today however it is going to be burritos for lunch I think.

Voldy blew up our engagement with that move. If he had just posted it and said hey, look at my girl, I think I would have felt less offended. It was the words that went along with it, basically saying that he'd flattered me into thinking I had a brain when it was clear what I was really good at. And it is very true that private pics don't stay private, even in a closed forum, or else I would never have found out.

Well I've been burned by men before, so my trust level was a hard wall for my husband to crack when he first met me. In my experience the risk of sending such a photo outweighs the want to present such a photo to said man unless that man has proven themselves to be of such high character as to never leave a doubt that their discretion and respect in the matter is beyond reproach. I do not think we can really 'help' a guy from participating so we must stop it at any potential source - don't do it in the first place. Any man that does it certainly doesn't have the maturity or respect level that is worthy of any woman.
