My wife and I are in the United States, working through the visa paperwork. We are wondering about form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, and whether it is worth it to pay for the authorization at this time. 

 

I know everything is out of wack right now, but it would be nice to know from others with experience if we can save our money or go ahead and file.

Your profile says CR-1. With a CR-1 you get LPR status from day one, so you don't need an EAD (i-765). You're  already a greencard holder.

If your profile shows the wrong info and you are planning on filing an i-485 or already have a pending i-485, the i-765 is for free.

You are doing a concurrent filing:   File I-485, I-131, I-765, I-864 and the I-944. You only pay for the I-485.  If you already submitted the I-130/I-130A include a copy of the NOA-1 with the filing.

If you are filing an I-765, you are not working through visa paperwork.  You are filing for Adjustment of Status.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..
