(3) Will "out and about" still be pronounced "oot and aboot"?

this particular stereotype bugs the ####### out of me, since no one in my family, friends, community at home, etc etc etc pronounces it "oot" and "aboot". I'm waiting to hear a Canadian pronounce those words that way on a regular basis.

Yeah that bugs me too. I have never heard anyone outside of South Park pronounce it that way. I have no idea where it comes from.

And yes, I will admit to being a fan of the Maple Leafs,

boooooo :hehe:

and additionally I'm an ABC fan (anybody but the Canadiens) ;)

I can also remember doing "ABC" cheers--which caused MUCH conflict at Calgary desi parties (prior to Skalbania's bringing Atlanta Flames to Calgary) as these oft involve watching part of a game. Now, it gets lively 'coz you have:

  • Flames fans, either ex-Canadien or never-Canadien
  • Oilers fans, same categories as Flames fans--which is why things get "lively"
  • diehard Canadiens fans (can someone please tell me why they haven't either moved to Montreal or transferred their support to Flames/Oilers?)

If you ask, "what about diehard Leafs fans?" -- no desi not already and permanently IN Pigtown would ever admit to being one!

(1) For those of ya'll (me being a very Southern boy) who move into the States or have already done so, will you continue or do you still use those unnecessary letters of the alphabet (namely "U") in commonly spoken words (ie. colour, neighbour, flavour, etc.)?

Yes. U is a very underutilized letter in the USA, and I'm committed to the cause of raising its exposure to the American public. After all, using the letter U is the proper spelling of the English language. ;)

A little background of me...

I am the other half of David and Karen.... I love you, baby.. !!!!!

Raised in Texas....So I can relate to that extra syllable in the words comment from an earlier post..It's aka a Texas Draw..

Lived in Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, North and South Carolina(the accent in those states are aka a Southern Twang) California, Arizona, and presently Missouri...Also spent a year in the GTA of Mississagua, where I met my beautiful and very tolerant fiance Karen...

I do not lay claim to my birth state of Ohio, nor any of my relatives who may be there as well...*shrugs*

Other differences in pronounciation that catch the ears of USC's...include but are not limited to, any word with the prefix "pro"

Sorry..pronounced "sorey" in Canada, and "sawry" in the States..

This is a good one..."Buddy" meaning anyone you don't know in Canada..So it is said as if "Buddy" was their name..."Buddy came out to fix my cable"...although his name was Jeff...

*steps back and quietly waits*

Could they have gotten it from the character of Blakjack Shellac on the old Bugs Bunny cartoons?

(of course, Shellac was about as valid a depiction of Canucks as the cartoon "Roman Holidays" was of actual life back in ancient Rome    )

Ugh the oot and aboot thing! That pisses me off to no end! I hate how some people I've met down here seem to think that their way of pronouncing everthing is "right" and that therefore any deviation from that pronounciation is wrong and shows a lack of intelligence. Grrr!

I do NOT say "aboot". I've noticed some people here say "Aboat". I'm living in the Boston area now, so it REALLY bugs me when people go "Oh, you say some words wrong". It's like "Oh yeah? At least I recognize the letter r as part of the alphabet and don't just ignore it" !!

Oh, and I also hate it when people from Boston will ask me if I'm liking the warmer weather now that I'm in Boston.

...

I'm from Toronto. Our weather is pretty much exactly the same! It's not like Canada is cold year-round but some Americans seem to think it is!

LOL! I think May start screwing with people...tell them made up stuff about Canada...kinda how Rick Mercer does in his "Talking to Americans" segments. ;)

You know, tell them how much I miss my dogs from my dog sled...how my parents are so jealous that now that it's April the snow is gone...how my parents are excited to visit Boston because it's "so far South!". :D Jsut mess with people's heads. :D Should be a blast. :D

That's another one of my favourites. My fiance is from Connecticut and I'm from london ontario. The weather is practicly the same since its almost straight east to get there, but I get asked if I like the warmer weather there too.

I have heard a funny story from a guy from Canada was across the border and saw another guy, an American, that had ski gear on the top of his vehicle. He asked him where he was going to ski. The American replied saying he was going across the border into canada to sky. This was in the late June! The American wouldn't believe him that there wasn't any snow in Canadian when he crossed the border. LOL. true story.

I never noticed this, but I do say it as the first one. i'll keep my ears open for that one. hehe

Was middle of the summer in Prince Albert SK. My buddy working at a gas stn had some Americans pull up and ask how much further they had to go til they could snow mobile!! Plus they gave him a bunch of their american beer!! Great deal when one is only 16 yrs old!! lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
