Not unless you get a valid travel document from HK to travel back to HK.

In theory, if you can get there, then you're fine. The US doesn't really care.

The main issue is having an airline board you...typically they will not board somebody with an expired document. It's too much liability for them as they are held responsible.

The second issue is the risk of being stuck abroad and needing some sort of emergency passport service, such as if a layover flight gets cancelled, or the plane gets diverted. (Edit: Or just if they refuse to board you)

The third issue is the DOS advises not to travel internationally right now.

Is there any reason you can't renew the passport within the US? A quick search implies you can do so fine...so going to HK to renew it doesn't make much sense to me.
