I’m in the section of immigration where I need to prove I have current health insurance. As a Canadian, how do I get the information? I’m not really sure what they want to see.

thanks

I'm not sure you have the correct timeline?  Are you adjusting your status? Are you seeking a visa?

I’m applying for a CR-1 spousal visa, I’m Canadian living in Canada and my husband/petitioner is USC living in US. Just recieved the NOA2 and boundless gave me a list of things to gather; one of them is health insurance.

sorry if my timeline is incorrect, just found this site and I’m trying to learn everything :)

You need to provide documentation on how you will be covered  when you arrive:

1. added onto spousal employer plan or

2. quote for marketplace insurance cover or

3. $$$$ ability to self pay

Thank you!

so more questions added to that.

My husband has US health insurance through his company Which covers spouses but they only accept new people in November. They also require a SSN. If my immigration is perfectly on time I’d be there by around April 2021. Is there a way I could somehow explain that or get temporary insurance until next November?

In terms of the proof of $$$, does this consider my spouses income?

thank you for all of your help and prompt replies. Really happy to know there’s a community of Canadians going through the same thing

An SSN cannot be required for any ACA-compliant plan. It is very often requested, but cannot be required to get coverage if you do not have one. It may take speaking to a Tier 2 or supervisor at the insurance company, but you can absolutely get coverage. Often they will use a placeholder SSN until you get your own SSN.

Change of residence is a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). Basically, moving to the US qualifies as a reason to enroll outside open enrollment (November in his employer's case). Typically this is available for 30 or 60 days after moving.

You should be able to show that a spouse can be added to his plan, and he costs for doing so.

Your change in immigration status triggers a special enrolment period so you can be added on to his policy within 30 days (May be 60 days so he needs to check the details with HR)

You  use your stamped visa in your passport  ( stamped on entry ) as evidence of the eligibility for special enrolment .. and tell them your SSN is pending on SSA issuing it and you’ll advise them of your SSN as soon as you have  it in hand
