biometrics photo vs passport photo

Hi.

 

Noom is under the impression that the biometrics photo for N-400 application is the same photo that will be used for his passport. Is that true? I've been assuming the passport photo would be taken separately. Why is this important? He's thinking hair length, hair style, and outfit are of critical importance for the passport, so he's planning ahead. :)

That’s a good question that I don’t know the answer to- I know they didn’t let my husband smile for the photo. Regardless,  if I were him I would look presentable whether it’s a passport photo or not. My husband always has a haircut and wore a dress shirt when he got any photo regarding immigration.

You can smile for biometrics. I asked specifically when I did my biometrics and I did smile (with teeth showing).

I also have a smiley toothy photo in my passport. It's ok as long as it's a natural smile and doesn't looked forced. Just check DOS requirements for passport photo specs.

 

Biometrics picture is the same picture that will be used in the naturalization certificate, not the passport. Natural hair style and length, and esp outfit are not important for biometrics BUT you want to look nice in your nat cert. A nice dress shirt with ragged pants (example) for biometrics is even ok because the picture only shows from your shoulder up.

The woman at the application center YELLED at my husband not to smile. I was there and couldn’t believe it. Her English wasn’t the best and she yelled multiple times “NO SMILE NO SMILE” so maybe it depends on the person you receive? Regardless, we left a negative review of our experience.

Yeah! He was bummed about it and is concerned the photo will look bad because he was so surprised she yelled at him lol
