Actually your wife still can work, she can apply jobs, just when she got the job offer, she needs to talk to the HR to generate the offer letter and SSN dire needs letter address SSA, then you can make the appt with the SSA mentioning that you need to SSN to start the new job, then you can get your SSN within two weeks.

This is a real pain. SS offices are closed, so we haven't been able to get a SSN for my wife. They say we can mail our documents in, but they can't guarantee we'll get them back. It would be a catastrophe to lose the passport with the visa in it, especially since we haven't received the green card yet.

Exactly the same thing with us, i dont want to mail in passport because I am worried it will be lost, what in the world...😕, oo also I  am delaying tax returns for 2019 because I want to do joint tax return,  and need social for that. Cant even make driving license with ssn.

seems we can't get a drivers license until we get a SSN. and can't get a bank account until we have a license with our address.

we filed with my wife's ITIN number as we have for years, and as a result were exempt from the stimulus payments. Which feels intentionally cruel. I mean -- it would make sense not to make a payment for ITIN holders, but at least make the corresponding stimulus payments to the family members who are U.S. citizens. Instead, the entire family gets zero for having one non-citizen family member.

I am not going itin route, i am delaying tax return. And will file when we will get ssn. Because holding us citizen of stimulus payments that everyone is getting is something thats sad. I didn't know even us citizen wont get payment,  i was delaying to get for my wife

Yeah I filed way back in April without knowing this would be the result. I would have delayed filing as well had I known.

Can we apply jobs without ssn?

Yes you can, like I mentioned earlier , when you get the offer, just ask HR to generate the offer letter and SSN dire needs letter address SSA, then you can make the appt with the SSA near you mentioning that you need to SSN to start the new job, then you can get your SSN within two weeks.

By the way, any idea when card production will resume?

@Abcd1234 @MarloMX @Jessiey unfortunately everyone who are in the final step which is waiting for their green card to be printed since mid-June are now having to wait for at least another full month due to the severely reduced card production capabilities- https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/how-the-trump-administration-is-turning-legal-immigrants-into-undocumented-ones/2020/07/09/15c1cbf6-c203-11ea-9fdd-b7ac6b051dc8_story.html

my congressional liaison has also hinted that the green card production backlog since mid-June has grown backlog is nearly 100,000. The Washington post article also mentions that the USCIS has threatened to also halt all USCIS activities, including what little remaining card production capability, if the $1.2 billion loan is not approved by Congress
